Handel’s Messiah Tenebrae with Chamber Choir

I have never been to a Handel’s Messiah concert before, so this was a treat for me, and it also was my first professional choir experience. In the beginning, the tenor began to sing, but either his was not working or the acoustics worked against him, because I could not hear him that well. His diction, however, was very crisp, so despite all odds, he did an excellent job. When the choir came in, “And the Glory of the Lord” I really felt the power of the Tenebrae choir. Even though they were smaller than the Concert Choir and University singers by quite a lot, there projection was powerful. I felt some of the bass solos and sections were a little harder to understand. I believe

The first time this performance was ever played was in 1742 in Ireland during the Christian season, Lent. Handel’s Messiah is a powerful show and was written by George Frederic Handel who was a British baroque composer famous for his many operas and shows. This piece is considered an example of baroque Ontario and is best known for its famous Hallelujah chorus, and of course has a Christian influence since it was written originally for an Easter offering. This symphony switched off between individuals singing and group singing. The tones in the music throughout the show changed drastically over and over, the pitch changed quite a few times.…

The night of October 26th, the Concert Chorale, along with several other ensembles, performed at the Meet the Music Department Concert. During this event, the Chorale sang Barso Re, a Hindu piece written by A.R. Rahman and arranged by Ethan Sperry. The song was used in a film titled Guru, and if translated into english, “Barso Re” means “Let It Rain.” A.R. Rahman may also be credited as the writer of the song “Jai Ho,” a Hindu piece heard in the major motion picture, Slumdog Millionaire. While at first glance, the group did a fine job executing the piece effectively, a deeper look at the performance and the music allows certain critiques to be made.…

I trudged onward, feeling the numbing cold of the atmosphere intensify with each hurtling step. Every breath I take now is filled with the icy air of my heart. It pains me so much as the ridgid air spreads the cold blood throughout my veins. The cold in my heart blurs my vision, rimming everything in red. Seconds later, I heard a gunshot whiz past my ear, before more started to follow, thick like winter hail.…

“One of the secrets of life is making stepping stones out of stumbling blocks.” –Jack Penn As my thoughts raced and mocked every ounce of confidence that I could have possibly possessed, I impatiently prepared for what was about to come. It was finally my time to be in the limelight—my time to share my God-given talents. I came from a shy and insecure mindset, but being chosen for the soloist position in a new style of worship would change everything for me.…

Bach begins with a double chorus cantata and included a concerto movement. During this piece, the orchestra included musical instruments like the flute, oboes, violins, and trumpets which shouted praise to the monarchs. The first chorus sings enthusiastically with the second showing praise of the assent. The chorus alternates homophonic and polyphonic sections and the background moves to the tonic at the end. There is a long melisma during the progression of the bass, tenor, alto and soprano.…

On the evening of March fourteenth, the talented singers of Carl Sandburg High School put on an excellent performance for friends and family to enjoy. Although it was rather short concert, I still had the pleasure of hearing eight diverse groups sing at this year’s Winter Choir Concert. At 7 o’clock on the dot, the women of Treble Choir came out on stage. As the chatter in the audience hushed, the president of the group announced who they were and briefly talked about the two pieces they were singing that night. Treble Choir then proceeded with singing Ragtime Town, the first song I heard that night.…

It was the night of September 28th and I could not sleep. I was so nervous because the next morning I had my audition for North Carolina High-School Honors Choir. Although I practiced for weeks and sang for my chorus teacher countless times, I never knew of what could have happened in my five minute audition. I would have to warm up and sing an excerpt of the audition piece “Sing Ye to the Lord.” Then I would have 60 seconds to study an 8-measure line of sight singing.…

“Selene’s Boat” was very soft and the choir stayed very still throughout the song. “Ave Maris Stella” was a required piece, but the choir did it well. They performed it at a slow tempo, and sang the entirety of the song without the conductor. Finally, the song “Barso Re” was in Hindi, and was very fast paced. The students in the choir seemed to enjoy “Barse Re” the most, as they moved more for that song.…

I’m sitting alone in the front pew of the University of Virginia Chapel on a cold December night. In front of me there is a tall metal stand with a set of bongos perched precariously atop. Behind me sits the entire crowd of the sold out Virginia Women’s Chorus Candlelight Concert. When I arrived in Charlottesville months earlier, I could have never expected to be here. I have just finished performing a piece with the chorus minutes earlier, when a member of the chorus steps forward and addresses the audience to explain and introduce the next piece.…

With my high school choir, I learned the work as a freshman, performed it that same year, and was later invited to sing with the St. Mark’s Episcopal Choir alongside choral and orchestral professionals. I have returned to St. Mark’s each December, earnestly awaiting to unleash the undulating melodies that lie in hibernation throughout the year. Not only is Handel’s music physically challenging, but also highly technical. The harmonic counterpoint, melismatic fugues, and other Baroque features of the oratorio all broadened my understanding of music theory, and how music can convey deep…

During my ongoing business conference to Colorado to learn about future career opportunities for my dual degrees in Communication design and Computer Science, I got to attend an orchestra concert presented by the Hapless Heroes who were conducted by Leslie Stewart. The show was musical theatre where they had a live orchestra playing in front of the stage while the actors explained the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. I attended this amazing show on the 4th of December. I love learning about Greek Mythology so I was already enthusiastic about attending this show.…
