Hand Motif In Macbeth

Decent Essays
In Macbeth, Shakespeare also uses the hand motif to express the guilt that Macbeth feels for the various sins that he has committed during his attempt to rule Scotland. This includes the murders of Duncan, Banquo, and the wife and child of Macduff. One line in the play that shows this is line.2 45-46, “Go get some water and wash this filthy witness from your hand.” This line shows that both literally and metaphorically, there is blood on Macbeth’s hand. The literal blood is easily remedied and can be washed off with water, but as the hand washing metaphor continues to resurface throughout the story, I infer that his guilt for the murders that Macbeth commits, or the blood on his hands, is never washed away until his death in scene 5.8

In the play Macbeth blood is a recurring theme that also acts hand in hand with the theme of guilt . [In act 1 scene 2 the wounded captain gives a gruesome and horrible description of the battle field, going into great detail.] (I don’t see how this sentence is relevant in the context of this essay) Once Macbeth and Lady Macbeth commit the murder, blood becomes a symbol of their guilt; they start to feel as if their blood stained hands will never become clean again, that their culpability for killing the king will always stay with them. In this quote, Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking and trying to wash blood off of her hands. From this, we can clearly see that she is going mad, which contributes to the dark feeling of the play. To add on, she is washing her hands of blood while she is asleep, which also helps develop the ominous mood. It can even be argued, that her hands symbolize her conscience, and she is trying to wash it clean, but her guilt won’t go away. Another example of hand being used to develop the play’s tone would be when Macbeth is preparing to kill Duncan.…

The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare uses motifs throughout the play to drive the plot. Motifs such as violence, guilt, and the supernatural are used to manipulate the character’s minds that drives them to make horrific decisions. During the course of the play, these motifs interconnect; as a consequence they affect the actions of the character. Although each character has his/her own visions of their future, none seem to understand the driving forces behind their behavior and therefore settle into the comfort of their altered personality.
