To fully understand this Grip Strength exercise there most be an understanding of the foundational physiological mechanisms, which are involved. These mechanisms are all incorporated into the muscular system of the body and its foundational unit known as muscle. A muscle can be defined as a bundle of fibrous tissue connected to two or more bones by tendons giving it the ability to contract and therefore inducing movement to a specific part of the body. The muscles within the human body are differentiated into three classes known as skeletal, smooth, and finally cardiac. Smooth muscle is an involuntary muscle (under control of the autonomic nervous system) that is mainly found within the walls and organs that participate in digestion such as the stomach, intestines and esophagus, but can also be found within blood vessels as well (Argosy Publishing, 2016).…
demonstrated right hand dominance. He used this hand for 95% of the activities during the session. When he was asked to write his first name and last name, he performed the task with a quadropod grip (adequate pressure was applied), in which he held the pencil with his thumb, index, and middle finger while using his ring finger as his supporting finger. This grasp pattern is immature and suggesting that R. is not able to fully utilize the more functional tripod grasp pattern as of yet. He was consistent in the use of his dominant and non-dominant hand in fine motor skills, using his right for the task and left to stabilize the paper during handwriting.…
In “Handwriting Without Tears®: General Education Effectiveness Through a Consultative Approach,” author Denise K. Donica examines the value of Handwriting Without Tears® (HWT) program for use in general education kindergarten classroom. Traditionally, the HWT curriculum is implemented by the occupational therapy practitioner in one-on-one treatment sessions with students. For the study, HWT was introduced into two consecutive kindergarten classes with the teachers, instead of OT practitioners, leading handwriting exercises for 15 minutes daily. The control group was the kindergarten class from the previous year, whose students progressed to first grade. Students’ legibility at the end of the school year was compared to other students’ scores who were taught using a different teaching technique called the D’Nealian style of writing.…
A. Miliann Kang’s ethnographic novel The Managed Hand is comprised of in-depth analyses of the intersections between class, gender, and race in the nail salon industry. Dozens of nail salons across the United States are run by Asian, primarily Korean, immigrants who run their own salons as a way of becoming financially independent in a foreign country. Class becomes a large factor when examining both those who own the salons, as well as the types of people who are customers at the salons. Additionally, the intersections between race and class are often very obvious, specifically in the nail industry.…

In “The Managed Hand”, occurrences of manicuring services framed complicated emotional and embodied interactions between different women. Two women sit across each other in a nail salon, but are differentiated by class and race. The manicurist is engaged in Kang’s analysis based on “body labor” which includes physical labor of managing the bodily appearance of the customer through touching, manicuring, and emotional labor of exhibiting feelings that encourage delightful feelings in the customers about themselves as a whole (20). It demands workers to control how they feel about their job, that shows they care about their customer. Kang analyzes different structures of service provisions that are shaped by racial and class inequalities…
Improved gross and fine motor skills have significant cognitive and socioemotional implications. Early motor development has been used for a long time as a foresight for later age motor and cognitive development. Researchers have long realized that specific motor development milestones, like walking or crawling, can help doctors and parents track early development in their children. Recently, they have learned that those milestones may be a useful tool for predicting later age development. Research shows that how quickly some children achieve major motor development milestones were predictors of later age performance in memory.…
For this child screening assignment, I worked with a forty-one month and three-day old girl named E.P. I used the Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) to conduct the assessment. E.P. was born on January 06, 2013 at full term without any complications and birth related problems. E.P. is the first child of her parents and they are expecting a new baby brother in October. She lives in an apartment with her father (J.P.), mother (T.P), and her paternal grandmother.…

Growing up in an era where writing technologies are developing rapidly has shape and challenge my writing process drastically as an elementary and college student. Growing up with crayons, pencils and pens were just the beginning. From what I remember from my toddler’s years, I recall being pressured by my teachers to have a perfect handwriting that others would be able to understand. Penmanship and creating well-structures letters were the main purpose during my toddles years and early elementary school years. I remember doing a lot of writing to picture-perfect my handwriting.…
Every parent essentially wants the best for their child when it comes to education. What the parents have to realize is that they too play an important role in their child’s education. Handwriting is a significant part of a child’s learning, it opens their ability to be able to communicate and express themselves. Often, parents neglect their child’s handwriting and do not offer them new ways to improve their handwriting. While on the other hand, some parents ask, ‘What are some ways I can help improve my child’s handwriting?’…
