In 1964, artist Ellsworth Kelly painted two simple rectangles of blue and yellow. Tim Nobel collects trash from the streets of London and refers to the trash piles as contemporary art. The Museum of Modern Art displays a folding lawn chair chosen by well-known artist Joseph Kosuth. Each of these representations of art provokes the debate discussing what is technically considered to be a piece of art work. Even though Kelly, Nobel, and Kosuth claimed to create different pieces of art, what separates their artistic trash from another person’s trash or Kosuth’s folding chair from the lawn chair sitting on my neighbor’s patio.
