Hammurabi’s Code of Laws Hammurabi was the ruler of the Babylonian Empire. Initially he ruled over only fifty square miles of territory but the fifty miles grew rapidly as Hammurabi conquered more city-states in order for Hammurabi to maintain peace and to unify the citizens, he created a code. The codes were called Hammurabi’s Code of Laws. There were 282 of these codes. These codes ranged from being about the social structure, the economic structure, the judicial system and more. Some of these laws were quite brutal, such as cutting off a hand, or “an eye for an eye”. Some laws were actually ahead of their time suggesting concepts such as insurance.
