About 4,000 years ago, c. 1792 BCE, a man named Hammurabi became the ruler of a small city-state in Mesopotamia called Babylon. A city-state is a separate part of a land that has its own government. Hammurabi ruled Babylon for 43 years. Within his ruling, he was involved with clashing with other city states and overcame them. He battled lands until he ruled a majority of Mesopotamia. As his civilization expanded, Hammurabi introduced a set of 282 laws in his 38th year of rule. These laws would be known as Hammurabi's Code, evidence of the aspects of life in this ancient time.
