Hammurabi’s code As we all know, Mesopotamian civilization counts as one of the most civilized and developed civilization among most of the civilization that were later or before found. Most of the times civilization were ruled by a ruler, who were trying to do what is best for their people and what is not. Hammurabi, who was one of those rulers, he had one of the few civilization which had a written language, Hammurabi created his own rules and laws for people to follow. The Hammurabi’s code counts as one of the major aspects of the civilization. The codes were made to stop evil acts, to punish those who do wrong, and prevent actions that would harm the society. However, in everything we have there are good and bad sides of it. And it is …show more content…
And it was mostly to help provide equality and justice, however they sometimes did not achieve that. As in any society, equality cannot be achieved because we have different types of classes, in the ancient Mesopotamian we had three classes. They were property owners, freed men, and slaves. And the punishments were different based on gender and class. For example if someone who was rich cut off the arm of a slave then the punishment would have been much lighter than those slaves who have hurt or insulted upper classes. Another example is that if a women slept with someone other than her husband, then they would have punished really hard because it was not allowed for them to do adultery, however it was not the case of a man who committed …show more content…
However, in many cases they were trying to solve bad habits with the bad habit. For example, if someone was responsible for taking someone’s eye out, then by law he will be punished by taking his eye out. Another example is that if the accuser, accused someone without enough evidence to support his claim then the accuser will be punished. These laws even though they are old and do not match with our era right now, however even in our modern day, if the accuser could not provide enough evidence then he/she will be punished for a fake claiming. The laws were there to mostly differ the poor and the rich. And to make the poor to work and obey the law because their punishments were much heavier than the
