Hammurabi DBQ

Hammurabi was alive about 400 centuries ago, and ruled for 42 years. Hammurabi eventually ruled an estimated 1 million people in the kingdom of Babylonia. Hammurabi made 282 laws that was carved on a stele (a large, pillar-like stone). By the time Hammurabi became the ruler of Mesopotamia in 1792 BCE, cuneiform writing had already been around for about 1,700 years.(BCE) Hammurabi’s code: was it just? Hammurabi’s code was just because of its family law, property law, and personal injury law. The family law in Hammurabi’s code was just. Hammurabi once said “ That the strong might not injure the weak, in order to protect the widows and orphans, I set up these my precious words.”(Doc B). In law 23 he stated that “He shall not divorce the wife whom the disease has seized.” and she will be able to stay and be taken care of in the house that they built together. ( Doc C). Hammurabi’s code of laws was just because with so many people that he needed to make sure they're protected, by creating fair laws. His rules were studied to understand the values of Mesopotamia and to understand their concept of justice. …show more content…
Rule 23 states that “ If the robber is not caught, the man who has been robbed shall formally declare whatever he had lost before a god, and the city and mayor in whose territory or district the robbery has been committed shall replace for him whatever he lost.” In rule number 53 and 54 “If a man has opened his trench for irrigation and the waters have flooded his neighbor’s field, the man must restore the crop he has caused to be lost.”(Doc D). Hammurabi’s property laws show that each law is fair because back then they could get all there belonging back if stolen. Now we have to pay more money for our stuff
