Hammurabi DBQ

Hammurabi Hammurabi created one of the first code of laws dating back about 40 centuries ago! Hammurabi got the laws from Shamash (the god of justice). He wrote 282 laws on one big stone stele. He was the ruler of the kingdom of Babylonia which had about 1,000,000 people in it (BGE). Was Hammurabi’s code just? The code of law is not just because of its family, property, and personal injury laws. Family law in Hammurabi’s code was not just. In law number 195 in states that if a son has struck his father, his hands shall be cut off (Doc C). In law number 129 it says that if a married lady is caught [in adultery] with another man, they shall bind them and cast them into the water (Doc C). Family law in Hammurabi’s code is not just. Because the punishments are too harsh, they should at least get punished by being a slave, that would result in more things getting done around the city. …show more content…
In law number 21 it states that if a man has broken through the wall [to rob] a house, they shall put him to death and pierce him, or hang him in the hole in the wall which he has made (Doc D). Law number 48 states that if a man has borrowed money to plant his fields and a storm has flooded his field or carried away the crop, ... in that year he does not have to pay his creditor (Doc D). Property law in Hammurabi’s code is unjust. Because the punishment for law number 21 is a bit overkill, because they hang him in the hole he made is just torture and is very harsh.
