“I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life is hard. You’ve got to go out and beat it.”- Maya Angelou. Maya Angelou was a prominent woman who lead the way for civil rights and spearheaded women’s right and freedoms. These rights and freedoms that Maya is fighting for were previously non-existent. This deficiency of rights can be seen in the Shakespeare play Hamlet in which the few female characters have been treated as though they are less than the men of the play. The female roles are handled throughout the play as though they are betrayers and that they betray the men they wed. Women are also treated as though they cannot make their own emotional decisions and are frail in their character. Men in the play treat …show more content…

Here, Hamlet is venting his anger that he has towards his mother and his step-father who both had gotten married hastily. He tells Ophelia to go to a nunnery so she cannot give birth to evil men like Claudius, who commit evil acts and so that she cannot marry and be faithful, which is where he believes his mother should have gone in order to avoid marrying his uncle. Hamlet also notices how she shows an innocent side to him, but under that she is a traitor to his love. Hamlet remarks “God has given you one face, and you make yourselves another: you jig, you amble, and you lisp, and nick-name God's creatures, and make your wantonness your ignorance” (3.1. 142-145). Hamlet tells Ophelia that God has given Ophelia one face on the outside, however, she makes another fake face that she shows to cover up her fake behavior and her lies. Hamlet's treatment of Ophelia clearly demeans in nature and shows how he views women as lower than men and that women should not be trusted under any circumstance, furthermore, these views that he holds do not only apply to Ophelia, but apply to other female characters in the play as

Within the soliloquy, Ophelia is portrayed to be furious over Hamlet’s mad behavior since he pretends that he never loved her. In order to illustrate such a scenario, she begins her soliloquy, by reminiscing about the many nights they shared and uses the image of rosemary, in order to claim that they used to talk about marriage in plenty of occasions. This juxtaposes with Hamlet’s jests at her, where he claims that he despises marriage. Ophelia as well uses a series of dark imagery, ‘lunacy’, ‘mad’, ‘demon’ and ‘carrion flies’ in order to emphasize how outraged she is with Hamlet for pretending that he never loved her. Hamlet within the nunnery scene, uses the image ‘painting’, in order to illustrate that it is a disguise for her lacking character.…

Hamlet also verbally abuses his former lover, Ophelia. Believing her to have betrayed him, with no proof, casts her out of his life and compares her believed treachery against him as her true self hiding underneath her makeup. Already fed up with his flimsy mother he decides to get rid of his ‘supposed’ whorish beloved by threatening to send her off to a nunnery (whore house). He sends Ophelia on an emotional rollercoaster, where he goes from convincing her he loved her to spitting that love right back in her face. Hamlet sees nothing wrong with this because his misogynistic society tells him there is nothing wrong with verbally abusing your girlfriend, but not giving Ophelia basic human rights to defend herself is where feminism is lacking…

Throughout Hamlet, Ophelia has a tendency to subject herself to other male characters wishes. She lives her life constantly under the direction of her father, and this leads her to her breaking point. His reaction shows a darker side of Hamlet and Ophelia’s relationship. He tells her multiple times to get to a nunnery, implying that she is as worthless as a prostitute. In many aspects of life, including literary works, women are often overlooked and not given the same importance as men. In William Shakespeare’s tragic play “Hamlet”, the female characters, Queen Gertrude and Ophelia, are given very few lines and are either portrayed negatively, or just seen as sex objects that men can do whatever they want with. The lack of significance they are given allows for them to be merely background characters, instead of playing major roles. Throughout the play, Queen Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother is portrayed negatively.…
