Hamlet's Relationship With A Father

Decent Essays
I’ve never been close to or even really known my father enough to say much towards how I would feel if he died. Knowing that he is my father and my blood, a part of me would be sad but without the experience actually happening, explaining my feelings is difficult. However, if I were to relate this sort of experience to how Hamlet’s relationship with his father was, then I would most likely be extremely upset. If my mother remarried so quickly after only a short few months of my father’s passing, I would honestly probably not be able to accept her choice. I would sympathize for her knowing that she would be happy and finally over the grieving of my father, but it would be hard for me to understand how she was able to move on so fast from her

Carolyn Heilburn known for being a strong supporter of women rights sought to combat the sexism that women faced, by introducing these issues in her article “The Character of Hamlet’s Mother” (1957); Heilburn argues that the male scholars like the men of her time, viewed Gertrude as a character of little importance due to the fact that she was a woman. In order to get her point across Heilburn introduces opposing critics all of whom deem Gertrud as weak-minded and apply words with female connotations such as “frailty” to represent her “whole personality”. However, the opposing views strengthens Heilburn’s argument since she ends up shooting down their views, with a more refined interpretation of Gertrud’s character. Her main purpose in the…

In the exchange between Hamlet and his mother in III.4 everything Hamlet says is powered by the emotions and rage he has toward his uncle. Hamlet is very annoyed as shown when he says “Now, mother, what’s the matter now?” (Shakespeare 1419) this line presents itself in a manner in which it seems that the Queen always has something to complain about and Hamlet, like the rebellious teenager he is, replies in a ‘are you serious’ tone as if the mother having something to complain about is a regular event. However, everything Hamlet says to his mother is extremely acceptable, because if my mother married my uncle immediately after my father’s death I would be angry as well. Hamlet even says he’s disgruntled with his mother’s lack of mourning, for…

In Polonius' home, Laertes plans to leave for France. Offering his sister, Ophelia, goodbye, he alerts her against going gaga for Hamlet, who is, as indicated by Laertes, too far over her by birth to have the capacity to love her decently. Since Hamlet is capable for his own sentiments as well as for his position in the state, it might be inconceivable for him to wed her. Ophelia consents to keep Laertes' recommendation as a "guardian" near her heart yet asks him not to give her recommendation that he doesn't rehearse himself. Laertes consoles her that he will deal with himself.…

When a group of actors visit Ellsinore, Hamlet decides to re-act the story of the Ghost, and show it in to King Claudius. The reason behind that is to see the reaction of the King, and if there is any then he is no doubt guilty. This is one of the few most important evidences of the inward conflict, as Hamlet did so to not reveal him of knowing about the truth. What is…

William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a tale of a boy who is given no choice but to be shoved into the hatred of his new stepfather and king after his father was murdered. Similar to today’s society, younger children with step-parents are more likely to despise and show hatred toward their new parent figure. Using sources such as Marilenabel Tramini’s Family Relationships, Joanna Montgomery Byles’ Shakespeare and Psychoanalysis, and Amanda Mabillard’s Introduction to Claudius in Hamlet, one can understand how, just like in Hamlet, children struggle to live with a step-parent. In Hamlet, Hamlet’s relationship with his stepfather is horrid because he was given a tip showing that he was the reason his father was killed.…

A critical lens is a perspective that the reader uses to examine a piece of literature. Different lenses look for unique details and aspects in the text, and help the reader find new information that may have never been discovered had the piece only been read through one single perspective. The archetypal lens is a critical viewpoint which allows the reader to identify places in a story which follow or deviate from universal patterns, also known as archetypes. Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, is a character who, as before mentioned, both follows and deviates from the archetype of the Hero’s Journey.…

Amidst the dark and cumbersome mood of Hamlet, love intertwines itself into the plot as a powerful theme. Love is defined as an intense feeling of deep affection. Many characters throughout the play are motivated by their desires and emotional attachment to another character. This is most prominently seen through the protagonist, Hamlet. Although, construed as a beneficial, pleasant and good state of mind, love leads to loss, devastation and pain.…

When we are born in the first place, we all are blank canvases that desire to be painted. Our family members, the artists who stroke the foundation of our personalities, play a crucial role in our life journeys either by inspiring us through our roads of trail or destroying us through their ruthless actions. The Catcher in the Rye, a fictional novel by J.D. Salinger, and Hamlet, a well-written play by Shakespeare, portray the influence that family has given to Holden and Hamlet, the main characters in the books. Although Holden grows up in the 1950s’ America, where nascent social rebellions started emerging, and Hamlet is identified as the Prince of the rotten state of Denmark, J.D Salinger and William Shakespeare manage to present these two…

For any son, the death of one’s father will definitely have a huge impact on their life however it appears that for Hamlet rather than simple grief or remorse, Hamlet instead turns to madness. Hamlet’s psychological development can be analyzed during his soliloquy of Act 2, Scene ii where he decides to plot against Claudius to revenge his father as well as Act 3 Scene IV. After King Hamlet’s death and putting Hamlet in a situation of where he must pretend to be insane, Hamlet’s true sanity can be questioned through his decision making and through the analysis of his pleasure seeking id, his realistic ego, and his over-thinking superego from a psychoanalytical reading of the text. By taking a look through the psychoanalytical lens, it is apparent through Hamlet’s long soliloquy that the death of his father is very much taking a toll on his mind. Upon analyzing the mental state of the struggling prince, one can…
