Hamlet's Motivation For Revenge Analysis

King Hamlet was just lying on the green grass in the orchard. Then, Claudius popped out of nowhere. He put this bright purple poison in his ear that was just peeking up at the sun. King Hamlet just broke out in these scaly rashes that killed him. That killed him without giving him any time to repent his sins. In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Hamlet is motivated to avenge his father's death. Claudius, Hamlet's uncle killed his father, so he could be King and marry King Hamlet's wife Gertrude. Hamlet is justifiably motivated in the play for his plot for revenge.

King Hamlet’s Ghost asks for Hamlet's help to avenge his death. For example, to prove Gertrude, the Ghost says, “...But look, your mother is in shock,” (Shakespeare 203).

For example, after Hamlet kills Polonius, Gertrude has Rosencrantz and Guildenstern clean up the mess, Hamlet says, “...Besides you're a sponge! What is the son of a King supposed to say to a sponge?” (Shakespeare 217). Hamlet killed Polonius by accident, he was killed because he was spying on Hamlet. Hamlet refers to Rosencrantz as a sponge because soaks up all the information he can then, empties it all to the King. This motivates Hamlet to get revenge because he knows that Claudius is spying on him. In addition, Hamlet is also deceived by Claudius when he tries to have Hamlet killed, Hamlet tells Horatio, “...found the document containing the King's instruction… to cut off my head, without even waiting to sharpen the ax,” (Shakespeare 301). Hamlet wants revenge because now he knows for sure that Claudius was trying to kill him. So now Hamlet wants to come back to Denmark to kill Claudius. It was the most epic betrayal because he killed his own brother. Hamlet should feel so betrayed because his uncle killed his own father. Hamlet should now want revenge now more than ever, because now he knows the truth of what his uncle did. In addition, since the ghost is talking to Hamlet, the ghost says, “...that incestuous adulterous animal. With his clever words and fancy gifts, he seduced my seemingly virtuous queen, persuading her to give into his lust…” (Shakespeare 65). Claudius got the queen to marry him. He persuaded her to give in to him. Hamlet wants to get revenge on Claudius. Claudius has betrayed Hamlet again and again. Hamlet knows that Claudius killed King Hamlet to gain the throne and a wife. This makes it so that Hamlet cannot trust anyone, not even the closest people to him because he has been betrayed too many
