Topic Sentence: Throughout the play, Hamlet demonstrates appearance, whereas Laertes demonstrates reality. Hamlet is the type of guy to act a certain way to get what he wants (for example, he pretends to be mad just so people leave him alone). Whereas, Laertes is the “what you see is what you get” type of guy.

Point #2A: Hamlet is a complicated character to understand. He tends to hide the real him at certain times. He hides his reality for various reasons: such as getting people away from him, making the king believe that he is nice and respectful, and for mocking people.
Quotes: “High and mighty, You shall know I am set / naked on your kingdom. Tomorrow shall I beg leave / to see your kingly eyes, when I shall, first asking your / pardon, thereunto recount the occasion of my sudden and more strange return” (4.7.46-50). …show more content…
However, in this letter, he is acting nice and respectful towards the king, asking for pardon. Hamlet is hiding himself behind an appearance in order to make the king believe that Hamlet is not out to kill him. But what Hamlet really plans on doing is fooling the king into meeting him alone and then killing him. When Hamlet acts mad around others, he is essentially fooling others and making them less suspicious of him.
