Hamlet First Draft

On my first draft of the Hamlet open topic essay I only got a 5 because I failed to use much substance. I used a lot of broad language and did not dive into specifics making my point not come across strongly. When I stated a plot point I did not mention why it was crucial in accordance to the prompt. Meaning when I did have substance I failed to identify the so what, or why does it matter. For my second draft, I tried to continuously relate each point I made with the thesis so ideas were not lost. I realized for my first draft I repeatedly incorporated a plot summary without having any take away based on the prompt. I also tried to use a lot of “if this had not happened, then” when the essay is a literary analysis so I should focus on what did happen. As well as forwarding the plot Polonius was able to offer comical relief by constantly being insulted by Hamlet. This comical relief helped to make Hamlet a better developed and dynamic play by adding more elements to the tragedy. Ultimately, Polonius led to the death of Hamlet focusing on the theme of mortality. When Hamlet finally got the guts to kill Claudius he accidentally kills Polonius instead. The murder of Polonius creates a bunch of problems for Hamlet, adding more disorder to the plot. First off, he killed Ophelia’s father so she is mad at him, however it is the brother who Hamlet needs to be worried about. Laertes now wants to seek revenge on Hamlet and makes it his goal to not stop until Hamlet is dead. Now, both Claudius and Laertes want Hamlet dead creating more chaos for Hamlet, moving the plot forward. Polonius is an essential character because his murder is the sole cause of the final duel between Hamlet and Laertes, which demises both of them.
