Dean Koontz once said that “When a liar became too skilled at deception, he could lose the ability to discern truth, and could himself be more easily deceived”. There’s nothing but deception all around the world people are constantly being deceived if they like it or not. Citizens are being deceived by others, even by themselves and once one becomes a professional deception artist that individual won’t be able to decipher what is true and what’s plain lies. In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare deception is one of the major themes. Characters in this play are constantly trying to make someone believe something that isn’t true in order to gain some sort of personal advantage. In this aspect it’s tough to decide if someone has actually gone crazy or if you’re being tricked into thinking so. Queen Gertrude and King Claudius think that Hamlet shouldn't be depressed over the death of his father so he decides that he “shall in all [his] best obey you madam” (1.2.124) This can mean one of two things, that Hamlet will attempt to be happy or that he has a plan to make everyone think he’s gone insane. Hamlet chose to act mad and when everyone started to notice this no one could figure out what the cause of it would be. Polonius thinks that his love for Ophelia has driven him crazy. Polonius was shocked when he heard Hamlet say to Ophelia that “You should not have believed me… I loved you not” (3.1.127-129). Once Ophelia is told this she becomes upset and in disbelief that Hamlet never loved her. Hamlet notices that he has deceived both Ophelia and Polonius but doesn’t feel one ounce of guilt, yet. Polonius realizes that he had been deceived by Hamlet when he confesses to Ophelia’s dead body and everyone around that he “loved Ophelia” (5.1.285).
