Hamlet’s interactions with his friends and family are often erratic; he both shows great enthusiasm or great anger and is always sarcastic. His relationships are also a cause for his illness, his father’s death, his mother remarrying, and his friends spying on him are unstable relationships that have unbalanced Hamlet’s life. Hamlet’s symptom of unstable relations can be described as “veering from extreme closeness and love (idealization) to extreme dislike or anger (devaluation).” (“Borderline Personality Disorder” 1). Hamlet expresses his love to Ophelia in the beginning of the pay and ends up expressing extreme anger and violence after he finds out she was spying on him. He also shows mild anger and sadness towards his mother in the beginning and in Act III, Hamlet becomes violent and shouts at his mother, he then kills Polonius in his rage for spying on him. After Hamlet stabs Polonius, thinking he was the king he replies,” I thought you were somebody more important. You’ve gotten what you deserve.” (III.iv.33). After his father’s traumatic death, the ghost of the dead King came to Hamlet and told him that he was murdered by Claudius. Hamlet was consumed with his revenge which pushed him, as well as his unstable relationships, to suffer from borderline personality disorder. Hamlet also became depressed and had suicidal tendencies. His family and friends spied on him which broke their trust with Hamlet. Hamlet couldn 't control his actions and killed Polonius thinking that he was Claudius; however Hamlet felt no remorse or guilt. He hated his mother for marrying Claudius right after his father’s death and couldn 't trust his friends. The only person that was loyal to Hamlet in the end was Horatio; Horatio was ready to die along with Hamlet when he was poisoned. Hamlet indirectly was the cause to everyone else 's death. The murder of Polonius caused Ophelia to go insane and drown herself, and the death of Laertes 's sister and father caused him to take action and plan with Claudius to kill Hamlet. While trying to poison Hamlet, Gertrude mistakenly drank the poison meant for Hamlet. Laertes stabbed Hamlet with the poisoned sword and Hamlet returned the favor. Hamlet then killed Claudius by the same poison meant for Hamlet; revenge was the motive that backfired on both Claudius and Hamlet by killing each other and the people they loved. The lesson to be
