One of the main ideas from Hamlet is morality. In the play, a large amount of characters die including Ophelia, Gertrude, and Polonius. During the play both Hamlet and Ophelia suffered a loss in their families. This loss is what caused both of them to go “mad”. In Ophelia’s case, the loss of her father caused her to go over the edge. In Act IV, Scene V, shortly after learning about her father's death, Ophelia has a break with reality. During this scene Ophelia has completely lost it and is handing out different flowers to certain people Each flower is symbolic and has a certain meaning. Ophelia is unable to cope with the loss of her father and she ends up drowning in a brook. Shakespeare used this symbolism to develop the idea of madness. In Hamlet’s case his obsession with his father’s murder is what drove him over the edge. Hamlet coped with his father’s death by devoting his time to avenging his father. During the play Hamlet does several things that he would not do if he were mentally stable. One example of example of Hamlet’s questionable behavior is when he killed Polonius in Act III, Scene IV. If Hamlet had mentally stable he would have not killed
