This is the reason he cannot make any decisions, he overthinks everything. Hamlet is a confused character he is an actor, a play writer, a student and the Prince of Denmark who is seeking revenge. Hamlet sees this problem in him and says, “Yet I, A dull and muddy-mettled rascal, peak like John-a-dreams, unpregnant of my cause, and can say nothing- no, not for a king.(II.ii 550-553). Hamlet says this after watching the players deliver a passionate scene. The word “muddy-mettled” means dull spirited, it points out that Hamlet is frustrated at himself. Hamlet is acting like a confused dull spirited dreamer, who is guilty. When someone is not pregnant, they will not have a child, Hamlet has made no progress with his cause so he is “unpregnant for his cause”. Hamlet is not producing results for his cause. While talking to Claudius after killing Polonius Hamlet says, “In heaven. Send hither to see. If your messenger find him not there, seek him i' th' other place yourself. Hamlet finds a reason to live: to kill Claudius, the man who killed his father. Hamlet however is unable to kill Claudius, as he overthinks and procrastinates it. This leads Hamlet to a disgust with himself, his lack of zeal leads him to self-loathing.
