Summary: After failing to discover the reason for Hamlet’s madness, Claudius tells Ophelia to meet up with Hamlet. Claudius and Polonius follows Ophelia. At first Hamlet is nice to her but then start getting suspicious thinking somebody sent her so he turns on her telling her that he never loved her. Ophelia is crushed by this, so Polonius tells the queen to talk to him alone. Meanwhile, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern tells Claudius and the queen that Hamlet shows excitement towards the upcoming show.
Class Notes: During class we discussed, the fact that Claudius and Polonius are determined to find the reason for Hamlet's madness. Horatio tells Hamlet to observe Claudius throughout the performance for signs of guilt. As the performance progresses, Claudius jump so Hamlet takes that as a sign of guilt. At the end they tell Hamlet that his mom is waiting to talk to him.
Class Notes: During class we talked about his soliloquy. The purpose was on his plan on how he is going to talk to his mother. He is planning on talking to his mother and hurt her mentally and verbally. But we discuss how in the end when his says the quote, “my tongue and soul be hypocrites,” (Act iii scene 2 page 38),” that his words do not reveal his inner and true thoughts.
Themes: Themes in this soliloquy is appearance vs reality and revenge. Appearance vs reality because of the quote when he said “my tongue and soul be hypocrites,” he is not saying what he is thinking. And revenge because Hamlet’s look as though he is finally taking to action the task his father told him to do.
