A Moral Compass Pointing South
Psychologist Philip Zimbardo once said, “The line between good and evil is permeable and almost anyone can be induced to cross it when pressured by situational forces.” The play Hamlet by William Shakespeare explores this permeability of what it means to be good or evil. The play surround a young man named Hamlet who discovers that his father, the king of Denmark, has been murdered by Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius. Hamlet decides to exact revenge upon Claudius, creating a plan to incriminate and murder the king. While, many may view Hamlet as a protagonist or “good guy”, his actions tell a very different story. Based upon his interactions with those he cares about and his plot to kill Claudius, Hamlet’s character is

Though the two of them genuinely care about Hamlet, their allegiances to certain Polonius and Claudius make him feel betrayed. Hamlet viciously attacks Ophelia saying, “If thou dost marry, I’ll give thee this plague for thy dowry. Be thou as chaste as ice, as pure as snow, thou shalt not escape calumny. Get thee to a nunnery, go. Farewell. Or, if thou wilt needs marry, marry a fool, for wise men know well enough what monsters you make of them. To a nunnery, go, and quickly too. Farewell.”(3.1.36-42) Hamlet states that even if Ophelia acts piously in her marriage she will “not escape calumny”, meaning her reputation will be tarnished. Within his tirade, he often demands that Ophelia go to a “nunnery”. This is an indication that Hamlet believes Ophelia is a sinner and must go to a convent to redeem herself. The barrage of insults is unwarranted from Hamlet; Ophelia obeying Polonius is to be expected considering he is her father. Hamlet exhibits the actions of morally flawed individual by verbally abusing someone who truly loves and cares about him. Hamlet even goes as far as to attack his own mother saying, “HAMLET ‘Now mother, what’s the matter?’ GERTRUDE ‘Hamlet, thou hast thy father much offended. HAMLET Mother, you have my father much offended.’ GERTRUDE ‘Come, come, you answer with an idle tongue.’ HAMLET ‘Go, go, you question with a wicked tongue. GERTRUDE Why, …show more content…
Hamlet displays that his decision to kill Claudius is not intrinsically tied to the ghost’s request by saying, “‘GHOST Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder.’ HAMLET ‘Murder?’ GHOST ‘Murder most foul, as in the best it is, But this most foul, strange, and unnatural.’ HAMLET ‘Haste me to know 't, that I, with wings as swift As meditation or the thoughts of love, May sweep to my revenge.’”(1.5.31-37) The ghost contradicts himself by condemning the murder of King Hamlet initially and then proceeding to ask Hamlet to murder Claudius. Furthermore, Hamlet seems very eager to kill Claudius saying “As meditation or the thoughts of love,May sweep to my revenge.”. Hamlets states that he wants to kill Claudius faster than lovers fall in love. Hamlet, an intellectually gifted individual, completely trusts this ghost despite there being no proof for it being his father except its image. Though he and Horatio are both intelligent, he is quick to believe the ghost is telling the truth; This could be because Hamlet wants to believe the ghost is his father, therefore giving him an excuse to kill Claudius. The desire to murder shows that Hamlet stoops to the same level of Claudius, in that he is committing the same sin. Furthermore, Hamlet never questions whether murdering Claudius is the right decision;Hamlet only questions why he cannot exact revenge. This sentiment is displayed in his soliloquy

The ghost tells him to avenge his death by stating, “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder” (1.4.29). This demonstrates that the ghost wants Hamlet to kill the one who has taken his life. The ghost not only tells Hamlet that he was murdered but gives information of who the killer is by saying, “ The serpent that did sting thy father’s life now wears his crown” (1.4. 44-45). This shows that the ghost wants Hamlet to take the life of Claudius and get revenge for what he did to Hamlet’s father. This…

Moving on, Hamlet knows that Ophelia is, as Videbaek eloquently put it, "her father's creature" (9). Her loyalty lies with her father, therefore anything Hamlet says or does to her can be trusted to reach Polonius, and likely also Claudius. We know Hamlet is aware of this chain reaction because he attempts to play it to his advantage in 2.1. In almost attacking Ophelia, Hamlet attempts to send the message of his madness to Polonius and consequently Claudius. Ophelia does report to her father that Hamlet had burst into her closet looking "[a]s if he had been loosed out of hell" (2.1.83), and Polonius assumes Hamlet was "mad for [her] love" (2.1.84).…

His anger and frustration that he feels for Gertrude soon starts to affect his relationship with Ophelia because he no longer has any faith in women as he takes on a misogynist perspective. Hamlet unfortunately takes advantage of Ophelia’s obedience toward men as he starts taunting her with cruel words to degrade her mentally. “Get thee to a nunnery, farewell. The violent attacks on Ophelia’s psychological wellbeing from those whom she has the right to deem her protectors lead to her demise. Arguably the most vicious psychological attack on Ophelia the way Hamlet silences, degrades, and dismisses her. Hamlet acts out when Ophelia attempts to give him back “remembrances” (3.1.100) that he hath given her, and he dismisses her by telling her to “get thee to a nunnery” (3.1.127). Hamlet’s behaviour toward Ophelia throughout their conversation is telling of his mental state. When he first sees her, he proclaims: “The fair Ophelia.…

Hamlet implores her not to create more sinners and covertly imparts the message that she should not allow herself to be swept up in the vices of those around her, namely Gertrude, Claudius, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, and her own father. His good intentions backfire. As Hamlet moves to weed the garden, he does not realize how his actions affect Ophelia – although he never intends for harm to come to her, his shift in behavior and the slaying of Polonius force her to madness.…

People can most often be put into boxes: a man is good or bad, smart or dumb, handsome or ugly; but while a person can have a tendency to lean in one direction, nothing ever works out to black or white. The same theory can be applied to characters of fiction, such as Hamlet from Hamlet, although because he is a fictional human his actions can be interpreted differently by different people. One opinion displays Hamlet’s actions and ideas of those of an entitled man of thought must fulfill the duties of a faithful man of honor. Hamlet consistently shows himself to be inclined to hypocrisy, an inability to successfully act on his wishes, and a lack of empathy towards others. Hamlet impresses an air of a man who intimately knows what the world is like, passing judgment on other characters for traits deemed immoral.…
