I believe the movie and the book has a happy ending. After worrying about losing Michel’s family and Italian heritage if they split apart, Hamilton finally put her foot down with Michel’s narcissistic ways. She filed for a divorce; I am sure it wasn’t easy to go through, especially with two young children. I can only imagine the anxiety she went through when planning the first trip back to Italy after the divorce. She put those feelings behind her and went anyway. When Hamilton mentions at the family dinner that she didn’t think she would be welcome and Michels mother gives her an incredulous “Gabrielle” sums up their feelings very well. She isn’t a guest who visited with their son, she is a member of the family who will always be welcome in
