“We know very well who we are….. But we don’t feel like outsiders at all.”( New Americana, Halsey) As a teenage girl I have constantly gone through small phases of feeling far from anything but myself. At the beginning of freshman year I just wanted to fit in, and I believed dressing in preppy clothes like Lilly Pulitzer and Lauren James guaranteed me popularity among my newest peers. It was my first year at PCA, and that shallow person I became afforded me many surface level friends. But that was the problem. Yes, I had a decent amount of friends, but only a few where more than ”Hey , I like that dress!” I desperately wanted to have friends, so I ended up changing myself to the girl I thought would have the most friends. Singer/songwriter, Halsey has taught me to veer far away from that mentality. She has shown me through her lyrics to love everything about myself.
My absolute favorite thing about Halsey is how she knows who she is, and she is confident in herself. She takes what she had learned from

Alison Culpepper says,”She does not change and she's so confident and she’s like herself and she’s like ‘Oh, I'm me and I don't change and I try to be like that.” One of the hardest things in today's society is to completely own your individuality and to love yourself, but Halsey completely owns herself and her style! “I want any kid who listens to my music to see that I am confident with all elements of my personality that I can't change.”( Halsey, January 28, 2016 ) She shows her love for herself through her stage presence, lyrics, and her love for her fans. When asked the question: If Halsey could say one thing to her fans what would she say? Alison replied, “ Be yourself and be confident!” Young people all across the world are affected by Halsey’s music and her ability to be confident. I have always been one to be wary of being cliche. Many a time, I have gone out of my way to avoid the stereotypical. In a similar fashion, I knew going into my teenage years, the appeal of partying and going out with friends in a somewhat reckless manner never quite attracted me. The stereotype that all teenagers go out and party never quite seemed to attract my interest. So going into highschool, I didn’t quite know what to expect.…

Over the course of his copious career, Aldous Huxley has written poetry, drama, essays, and about history, amounting in over 50 books. He is best known for Brave New World, a chilling dystopian novel similar to Orwell’s 1984. After writing the book, he moved to the United States and turned his attention more to history and mysticism. He experimented with psychedelic drugs and had an ambiguous belief that spiritual truth can be attained through intuitive experience, such as sight. Huxley developed a disease that left him nearly blind when he was only 17 years old, but that did not stop him from becoming a serious novelist and a prodigious writer.…

Scarred for life As a kid in elementary I didn’t have many friends, wouldn’t exactly talk to a lot of people, and I was kind of the “lonely” type. I was in 5th grade from what I remember. Even though I was so quiet I expressed my personality to others with my work in art, where I absolutely loved to be! I pretty much hated music because the teacher would always put the other class in front of the one I was in, I’d always kick the girl’s seat in front of me and we pretty much hated each other. To find out our parents were best friends and so they brought us together and we became best friends.…

“Both her preschool and kindergarten teacher reported that Kaytin was socially adept and often too concerned with the activity of others. Because of being so socially in tune, Kaytin resisted utilizing recommended devices, such as a special seat cushion, out of fear of appearing different.” The desire of the acceptance of peers is extremely common for everyone, especially adolescents, and I am not an exception of this. Consequently, since the age of five, I have been changing aspects of what I do in my life so that I would seem similar to everyone else. Evidently, high school was no different, as I finally feel accepted as a cheerleader, I fear that breaking what is expected could ruin that for me.…

We all listened to the same bands, loved the same teen heartthrob, and all had a similar personality. It took losing a core group of friends of mine transitioning into freshman year to show me that it’s okay to be your own person. I will say freshman year was a huge struggle for me to go through without being friends with the people that I had grown closest to in the 8th grade and years prior to 9th grade, but in the long run it has benefitted me more than I could have ever imagined that year. I now am not afraid to be alone sometimes and not always hang out with a group of people or one person every weekend. I’m okay with spending time by myself just relaxing in my room or grabbing some lunch at bread co by myself when I can.…

Acceptance, an important value in our society today, can be hard to find and gain from others and even more so from ourselves. It’s something almost everyone struggles with at least once in their life. I can remember sitting in gym class when teams were being picked praying, as hard as any second grader could, that I wouldn’t be picked last. Even back then, at seven years old, I wanted nothing more than acceptance and that continuous desire for it has followed me, even now. I’ve never been the most popular girl in school.…
