The general haloform reaction is between a methyl ketone and a halogen, where X can be chlorine, bromine or iodine. This reaction can occur using sodium hypobromite or sodium hypochlorite. In terms of the reaction performed, sodium hypochlorite, better known as bleach solution was used. This reactant proves very resourceful to the mechanism due to the great supply of electrophilic halogens. The initial step of the haloform with sodium hypochlorite involves the formation of the enolate. Once this occurs, the hypochlorite reacts with the alpha carbon on the enolate, yielding an alpha-haloketone, thus causing the proton to become more acidic.
