Life’s Compassionate Lessons A teacher’s mentoring can have long lasting positive effects on the choices and outcomes students. Throughout the play “Master Harold”...and the boys by Athol Fugard, Sam, one of the main characters is portrayed as an influential teacher for Willie and Hally. Sam is employed by Hally and his white family. Sam and Willie work in a restaurant run by Hally 's family. Sam has raises Hally once he starts working for the family. Sam is seen as a powerful character, both Willie and Hally look up to him. Sam teaches Willie and Hally what is right and what is wrong in order to help them get through life. In the play“Master Harold”...and the boys by Athol Fugard, Sam teaches important life lessons by sharing physical and emotional lessons throughout the story to Willie and Hally, in order to suggest that one can gain the ability to accept others by following a role model.
Sam teaches Willie how to Ballroom dance throughout the story, which is an example of Fugard showing Sam as the main teacher for Willie during the play. Sam, a great ballroom dancer, decides to teach his friend Willie the art in order to prepare him for the dance competition that is in two weeks. Sam says to Willie “Five, six, seven, eight... (Willie starts to dance) A-n-d one two three four... and one two three four.... (Ad libbing as willie dances) Your shoulders, Willie... your shoulders! Dont look down! Look happy, Willie! Relax, Willie!” (4) These directions show that Sam is the teacher in this situation, he teaches Willie exactly what to do in order to perfect the dance. Sam continues to teach Willie how to dance and what to fix to help him do well in the dance competition. Fugard portrays
