When most people hear the words outreach center, they seem to visualize a sad place where homeless people sit around asking for food and clothing. In today’s society many people struggle with poverty and reaching ends meet and have to turn to an outreach center for help. An outreach center provides a place where a community can come together, and helps families who struggle providing necessities for their loved ones. The Hallsville Outreach Center takes in families who struggle, and gives them a relaxed feeling, by lending a hand. When I stepped out of my car, a slight breeze blew against me. I glanced around to see children running around the park swinging and sliding on the playground equipment. Their mothers walked around the concrete track, which circled the park. As I kept looking around I saw a church across the street. The parking lot was deserted, only occupied by a few leaves that danced across the lot. A garden in front of the building gave me a home-like feeling. The plain building disguised itself humbly. What looked like a simple building held greatness inside. I walked down the sidewalk that led towards the entry way. I reached for the door knob and opened the door. I …show more content…
We took a zig zag path down the hallway visiting the adult clothing room, the bill room, and most importantly the food room. The outreach center includes a food room that is set up to look like a real grocery store. This makes costumers feel like they shop for their food, instead of asking for handouts. When I first walked into the grocery room the first thing I noticed the isle in the middle of the room. Yellow tags marked the “price” of the items (since everything is free, they go by points not prices). In the back right corner a freezer, that also looked like an actual grocery store, held meat inside. On the left side wall a long table held food and coffee for the costumers to consume while

DESCRIPTION: Pulling up to the Dorothy Day Center the first time, was a shocking sight. There were so many people waiting for the doors to open for the night. I never realized how many people in the St. Paul area relied on Dorothy Day to receive a meal or to have a safe place to sleep for the night. Many of the clients waiting outside carried bundles of bags, luggage, and carts teeming with their possessions.…

The two sections were separated by the checkout counter and a wall display of accessories. The layout at the front of the store was crowded. Early upon entering the College of Social Work I became interested in the homeless population. In my junior year, I took the time to volunteer with the Renaissance Community Center, an organization that provides various services to Homeless individuals in Tallahassee. Volunteering here taught me about people and the effects of interpersonal communication, how the availability of services can aid people during personal crisis, and the limitations of resources and access on a vulnerable population such as the homeless. This experience is valuable to me as it increased my interest in the population and my awareness of how it intersects with values and the purpose of social work.…

Joe and Stephanie Mancini founded and built, and continue to build the Working Centre and a multitude of programs that fall under its umbrella in downtown Kitchener. The Working Centre is a culture, a social movement, a place where all are treated with respect (D’Amato, 2015, para. 5).…

Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me.…

Mission Outreach Project: The experience at Mission outreach project was incredible. Because I thought that kind of places is only for homeless, I was surprised that some well-dressed seniors, who didn't look like homeless, were also there. It is very nice that volunteer workers there not only provide those people food and clothes but also are providing them a place to socialize with others. I wish we could have had time to talk to some of them.…

St. Anne’s Angle Church is a beautiful church. Its colorful glasses on the wall bring people to the different world, and its brilliant ceiling is picturing a bright night sky which was cover by the millions of stars. Its wall surrounds the seats are decorated with the oil painting and each of them tells the story of their god. I heard a soft humming voice before I stepped into the building; it sounds like well-recorded video tapes. The church’s entrance was a hole to the wonderland, and I fall in there.…

The “Tuning In” Process When it was first mentioned that we would have to go volunteer at Street Outreach I was a little apprehensive because I had never dealt much with people experiencing homelessness. Before it came time for me to volunteer I tried to imagine the types of people we might encounter and what their state of health could be, so I could prepare myself not to react negatively to the people we are trying to help. Doing this did not help me, I started to pity people that were experiencing homelessness, and I felt they were incapable of doing things by themselves. So I think that I over thought the “tuning in” process, and I hindered myself instead of helping myself. While over thinking the “tuning in” process, I also developed a very narrow description of somebody who should be homeless.…

Trembling, my hand grips the old, unsteady doorknob and as I turn it, my heart skips a beat. The wobbly door creaks when it opens, and darkness fills my eyes. The smell of must enters my nostrils as a light draft comes up the uneven stairs. The light switch struggles to hold on to the ceiling by one frayed cord. My unsteady hand reaches for the switch, and as I attempt to stay on the laminate floor, one lone light ignites, it is covered by an overload of cobwebs and built up dust.…

Growing up in a southern Alabama town of less than 10,000 residents, I was not truly aware of the issue of homelessness. Homelessness was only a subject which I had seen in the news and in movies. However, when I became a peer helper as a junior in high school, my perception soon changed. I became part of a peer mentoring program, in which I counseled underprivileged and troubled middle school students. Through this program I discovered that homelessness was not a problem rooted in major cities, for it lied even in a town as small my own.…
