To many, the end of October is a time of corn mazes, costume parties, and haunted houses. Many cultures celebrate harvest festivals during October, though none are as well-known as Halloween. Because Halloween is primarily descended from the Celtic festival of Samhain, when some think of Halloween, they think of bats and cats and witches. However, although Halloween as it is currently know is a wholly American creation with regional rituals handed down by generations, it did not become a “full-blown American holiday” until the turn of the century (Bannatyne). Because of the contemporary nature of Halloween, without Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Sylvia Plath’s “Lady Lazarus”, and George A. Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead, the holiday as we…

When we went trick or treating at the mall, people looked at us as if we we weird and confused. They had either stared at us or looked confused. These reactions happened because we went against the social norm of trick or treating on Halloween. Instead of trick or treating on Halloween, we trick or treated six months after Halloween. Cultural appropriation is defined as the adoption of elements of one culture by members of a different cultural group especially if the adoption is without the consent of the originating culture. The dominant group is usually always the one to exploit the less privileged group, without having any prior knowledge of the items or piece of culture in question that are being appropriated. There are so many Halloween costumes out these days people can literally be anything they want from a fairy to witch, to a vampire or a princess. Those costumes seem harmless enough right, just dressing up and having a good time getting lots of candy. Unfortunately some of the costumes both in the past as well as today are a bit questionable and actually offensive…

For parents, Halloween is the scariest holiday. It is unnerving enough that kids walk around in the dark asking strangers for candy. Some of the kids' costumes, though, can make the hairs on the back of parents' necks stand up. Halloween costume options are often skirts that are too short, shorts that are too tight, tights that are too sheer, and the outfits that are misogynistic. Little girls' costumes are too often frightening thanks to their reliance on sex appeal.…

600 million pounds of candy are bought every year for Halloween, which totals up to a whopping 1.9 billion dollars. Kids around the world are enjoying the fun of it yearly, which is great in my opinion. Even though nearly everyone loves Halloween, there are still some flaws I’ve seen while trick or treating, or in the news. Whether it is wasting candy, lacing it with drugs, or unenthusiastic people, I think we need to change it. If I could change something in the world, it would be the way we give out and eat candy for Halloween.…

To Alan, Halloween was nothing more than a free pass. A pass he'd get once a year that would allow him immunity to let his true self come forward and torment the world. Alan had to stay indoors for fear coming down with pneumonia, or something equally as bad which had landed him in the hospital several times…
