Teaching On Halloween Reflection

Teaching on Halloween, was a different experience. It helped me understand how the students are affected and influenced by the things surrounding them (environment, their dress, the holiday). I learned that when teaching students on a holiday, or any day different than the norm, instruction must be more interactive and accommodating to those changes. Teaching on Halloween was harder than I expected it to be. I had to test my flexibility skills and practice adjusting in the moment. I also learned that if I include the student’s interests (their costumes, anything related to Halloween) in instruction, they are going to be more likely to be engaged. I learned to try to use the distraction as a way attain the student’s attention during instruction. In reference to the scholars, I learned more about their learning abilities. Even though there were lots of distractions and different behavioral problems throughout the lesson, I was surprised that most of the students were still engaged and could complete the assessment with accuracy. I thought that most of the students would be lost, …show more content…
I uncovered that two students needed a reteach on place value disks. During the instruction, these two students were drawing flats (100), quick tens (10), and disks (1) in the place value chart instead of place value disks. These students needed a reteach on the foundational skill of place value disks. I also uncovered that one students needed a reteach on the lesson concept. This student did not understand how many ones make a ten and how many tens make a hundred. They also could not identify the value that each disk represented when in the place value chart. With Halloween taking place just about a month ago and me being a first-year college student, I found it suitable to choose a topic that related to both college and the holiday that so many of America’s youth actively participate in these days. So, I began my research; through countless amounts of Google searches and digging through all sorts of news websites, I finally found an interesting article from The New York Times. The title was “Why Halloween at College Is So Frightening” and was written by a man named Mark Bauerlein who teaches at Emory University. The periodical starts off by explaining the scary effects that Halloween can induce on the students and administration across many of today’s college campuses. This is particularly because…

Halloween is like a horror movie, except with drunk teenagers instead of axe murders. It was about two years ago, when we were still living in Germany. It was a fairly peaceful Halloween night and the sun was about to set. My friends and I were walking around the village, what Germans call a town. After about half an hour of us walking around and talking, some acne filled, tall, muscular and older, German teenagers came up to us.…

As I passed through downtown Atlanta, I couldn't help admire the home of the Braves, not just because it was an architectural wonder but because it brought back to mind that very first lesson when Professor Van Huevelen sparked my curiosity when he said we find that there are some things in this world that are repeatable. Repeatable. Repeatable. So a baseball pitcher, if he throws a ball with the same speed and in the same direction, spinning the ball the same, it'll end up going about the same place.…

He has significant difficulties with number sense. Finding connections, patterns, the meaning behind each mathematic skill and applying skills into different contexts is very challenging for him. Colin’s knowledge of place value has steadily increased throughout the year, although it is inconsistent. If presented with a problem that states, “3 tens + 2 hundreds + 7 ones,” Colin has learned to draw a place value chart to help him figure out that the answer is “237.” However, Colin often struggles to determine that the “3” represents the number “30,” the “2” represents the number “200” and the “7” represents the number “7.”…

I have observed in most to all of the students ‘accommodations list sheet, students need a visual aids and cues during instruction and could be used during formative and summative assessments. During my direct teaching, Ms. Boerema projected the plot structure map on her computer, which was displayed on the white board for students and myself to see and use during this part of the lesson. Also, during my direct teaching, I had manipulatives of laminated and colored paper of part of plot structure and definitions of each part of the lesson. To increase active classroom engagement, I would have each student put a definition of each part of plot structure on the white board. This allows students to move to and from the whiteboard back to their seats, which can help students become more attentive through movement than having the students sit in their seats.…

People everywhere decorated their houses and yards, families carved jack-o-lanterns and displayed them outside, and herds of children dashed from house to house trying to stockpile as much candy as they could via trick-or-treating. I remember dressing up in numerous costumes from skeletons and crash test dummies to ninjas and mimes. Even during the ninth grade, the year before my mother took this photograph; I still managed to take part in the holiday. That year was reasonably demanding, with teachers assigning various projects and homework assignments that would occupy most of Halloween night. As a result, I told my mom and sister to go trick-or-treating without me so that I might complete my…
