“When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful.” That famous quote was once said by Eric Thomas, who has gone through many difficulties that has lead him to the successful life he has today. After countless arguments with his parents and aunts, Thomas decided to drop out of high school and was homeless in Detroit for two years. While he was homeless, he met a preacher who inspired him to go back to school and make something of himself. During this time he met his wife, moved to Alabama, and attended Oakwood University. He spent twelve years working toward a graduate degree which he finally earned in 2001. Once he got his degree he became a preacher and motivational speaker. Throughout the whole song, this band is certainly good at motivating the listener to always go after their goal no matter what it is. The rhetorical question that grabs one’s attention and makes her think about taking steps towards her goal is “How you ever gonna know if you never even try?” The words make one to ponder how she is going to reach her goal if she doesn’t try all the possibilities to reach it. If one continuously tries and never gives up the possibilities of success are endless. The video portrays a young girl whose dream is to become a professional ballerina, who is trying to do a certain spin for the dance and she ends up falling. As the girl is on the floor the other ballerinas are staring at her and smirking because she failed. In this scene one can say that it does nothing to damage the girl it pushes her to keep trying and to never give up because she realizes that she wants to accomplish her goal and live her dream of being professional. The listener is constantly reminded that even though the most arduous challenges. If one works hard enough she will succeed in her personal goal. If one doesn’t set goals in her life, then she will have nothing to work towards. As a kid we dream of all the possibilities that we can be when we grow up. As we get older in our teenage years and become young adults, we oftentimes forget the dreams and goals we once had as kids. This song reminds one to always go after her goal in which that it can be whatever she wants it to be. “ The difference between those who succeed and fail: not taking advantages of opportunities.” That was said by Eric Thomas to remind one that to take every opportunity that comes one’s way to work towards their goal.
