The Halifax Explosion was caused by a French cargo ship (Mont-Blanc) full of explosives that collided with a Norwegian vessel. It occurred in a Strait that connected the Bedford Basin to the upper Halifax Harbour. When the ships collided, a fire ignited on the French cargo ship which set the explosives off. 2000 people were killed by the blast, debris and the buildings that collapsed, and about 9,000 were injured. At 8:45 A.M., the ships were going about 1.6 to 2.4 kilometres per hour when they collided and the fire began to grow. It only took 20 minutes for the ship to explode after the fire ignited, where energy was released that was similar to 5.8 million lbs. of TNT.
