Half Life Application Essay

When I was eleven, I went to Montana to do an internship with a family friend who is a veterinarian. I was so excited that I was going to Montana, to work with animals. This was ranching country. Some people would call it the middle of nowhere, but I call it paradise. On the first day, I went to the clinic. The vet explained what we were going to do that day. We needed to treat 50 head of cattle for a rancher. As we were gathering supplies, she asked me, “How much medicine will we need, if we are treating 50 head of cattle and they all weigh around 800 pounds? They need 20 mg/100 lbs.” I thought to myself, “What?, I came here expecting physical labor, but not a math quiz!” Up until this point, math was just something I learned in each grade so that I could do the math in the next grade. At the time, we had work to …show more content…
For example, more advanced concepts are needed when trying to find out how often the patient needs to take their medicine. When thinking about how often to administer a dose, it helps to understand the concept half life. The half life of a drug being absorbed in the body is the time needed so that one has 50 percent of what was administered. Half life can be graphed as exponential decay. This is useful because when one knows what the rate of the half life is, one can calculate when the medicine needs to be taken. It is not so much that veterinarians would calculate based on the half life. It is more that veterinarians need to understand the concept of half life. For example, if a dose of 1000mg is given and the half life is 6 hours. After six hours there would be 500mg left. However, a veterinarian needs to understand that all the medicine would not be gone after six hours. On that first trip when I was eleven, we did not talk about exponential functions. However, every time I go back, the vet keeps teaching me more and more about how math is used in the veterinary

Part B: During the children’s early years, they learn that mathematics helps people making sense of their environments through play, investigations, real-life situations, and focused learning experiences. Children come to school with different experiences about mathematics (Anghileri, 2006; Yelland, Butler, & Diezmann, 1999). Many children enjoy singing number names, identifying how big objects and people are, labelling shapes, and using their developing mathematical understandings to think and reason (Reys, Lindquist, Lambdin, Smith, Rogers, Falle, Frid, & Bennett, 2012; Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, 1997). In the education system there is a framework describing the children’s mathematical development and expected levels…

Many people have different opinions about what they think about math. For instance, I looked up opinions people said about math and most of them were negative. One person stated: “I know a lot of people don’t like it. For me, I was good at the subject, but I didn’t really enjoy it.” In the story “Why is Math so important for kids to learn?” by Elise Wile, the author’s attitude toward Math is interested for these reasons: (1) she explains how it teaches logical and critical thinking, (2) she explains how it teaches life skills, and (3) she also explains how it supports continuing education and careers.…

“Writing Literacy Memoir” It 's strange how clearly I remember this paper ,where I can not remember what I did last week. It was a Thursday night sometime during May 2013 where it was a hot, humid night and I was exhausted. I currently hold an Associate of Science in Biomedical Equipment Technology and this format is new to me. I attended a College that focused on one course a month and had to adjust to a course being spread out over several months. Understanding the problems in Algebra taught me that there is always some type of formula to solve an equation. There is not one specific problem that I can reflect on over the other, because they all have their patterns. Sometimes there is more than one way to arrive at the correct answer.…

If you ask me whether or not I like children, my answer, given grudgingly, would always be yes. That’s not to say I have any particular dislike for them, but an hour of trying to teach them what the number 11 is when they try to count on their fingers can only be described as incredibly tiring. “Come on you guys, 11 is not the number 1”, I told them gently. It would have been another mind-numbing hour had one of the fellow student-helpers not suggested I use blocks instead. We made immediate progress from that point.…

It was at a small clinic that didn’t see many animals, but this is where I saw my first surgery, a routine neuter. What I remember most is the excitement I felt and when the doctor had finished he told me the surgery was so simple a monkey could do it. All I wanted was to be that monkey. Not long after, I began volunteering at a small zoo. This allowed me to get close to exotics and to care for them.…

The fields of science, technology, engineering, and math are paramount in understanding the world around us. I am passionate about science because it involves the pursuit of discovery and pushing the boundaries of the unknown. Science is composed of tested hypotheses that explain how and why our environment works as it does. However, under the scientific method, it is not assumed that what was previously believed to be true cannot be proven otherwise with additional research. This provides an essential check and balance system and allows facts and research to support our hypotheses.…

When one thinks about high school teenagers, "perfect" is probably one of the last words that come to mind, and not without good reason. We aren 't always the wisest people on the planet and lack in some areas more than others. I can easily say so for myself, and yes, although I am ashamed of not being able to keep up with certain subjects as well as others, I search for ways to keep myself going and overcome any difficulty in said areas, in my case, math and history. I remember back in middle school, I had the more "lax" history teachers, and I quite enjoyed it. There wasn 't much work, tests were open-note, and there were plenty of extra credit opportunities, so I passed both years with ease, despite me not fully understanding the subject.…
