Pilgrimman Half Ironman

Well its official! On Sunday, September 20, 2015, I completed my first half ironman distance triathlon at Myles Standish State Forest in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and it was awesome! I loved it all!!! If you told me last year that I’d be racing a half ironman distance triathlon, then I’d say, “That’s crazy. There is no way that I would do a half ironman triathlon.” So who made me change my mind? My personal trainer and friend, Nilton Motta, said that he wanted me to do the Pilgrimman Triathlon as my first half ironman. At first, I thought he was crazy, but he believed in my ability to compete at this level, and I trusted him completely. So after thinking it over for a bit, I believed it myself so I happily signed

My apprehension was the swim because I had a hard enough time completing a 1/4 to 1/3 mile swim during the sprint races that I had competed in for the past few years, never mind completing a 1.2 mile swim, but I had about 10 months to prepare for it. So I spent the winter in the pool swimming back and forth, forth and back working on my stroke and endurance. I also spent many hours biking indoors using a bike trainer. In addition to swimming, biking and running, I also performed high intensity interval training twice a week. When the weather started to warm up, I moved my training outdoors swimming in the pond and biking and running in the forest. In addition to all of this training, I also had to figure out the nutrition that would be required in order to complete this distance. On long training days, I ate cookies, gels, bananas and drank Xtend Endurance to keep my energy level up so that I could keep on …show more content…
I sprinted out of the “run out” section, and this is when I could feel the muscle fibers in my quadriceps contract. When I looked down at my legs, it resembled something out of a science fiction movie. There appeared to be something sticking out and moving around at the anterior of both quadriceps. The muscle fibers tightened in the same local area of both legs. It was extremely painful! At this point, I tried to massage them and run again, but that had little effect so I had to stop because it was too painful. I briefly thought to myself, “How am I going to finish this race?” So I squatted all the way down and stretched my quadriceps out. After doing this, I was able to continue the race. My quadriceps were still very tight, but I was able to run and eventually the muscles started to feel better. I had to complete four 3.3-mile run loops, which totaled 13.2 miles. Nilton drove by me on the run and asked if I needed anything so I told him that I needed a massage. He yelled at me, “Don’t stop running! Keep going! You have a good pace.” The run course was also an extremely challenging one with more hills. There were three water stops with water, Gatorade, and different flavored gels and Oreo cookies for nutrition. The volunteers on the run leg were absolutely wonderful! During this portion of the race, I saw lots of smiles on the

While the 541,000 marathon finishers within the US all come from different backgrounds and have distinct differences, they are frighteningly similar in many aspects of their lives. Take for instance the level of training and determination each marathon runner has. Six out of the seven days every week for at least a couple months, they spend their days in the gym and out on the trails. One must build a body of muscle in order to complete the lengthy race – as is demonstrated by the father-son duo of Ken and Will Satre. Don’t let Ken Satre’s age or small stature fool you; he is a machine.…

For those eight hours that my feet were pounding the paved trail, sidewalk and street, I was free of Multiple Sclerosis, the same as all my fellow runners, just running to cross that Finish Line and be able to say, "I did it!" After the race yesterday, my feet and legs were sore from running 50k and my neck and shoulders were sore from wearing my CamelBak with my 32-ounce water bottle in it for the duration. I took a super-hot shower and slept very well but I still hurt. Oh well.…

To ensure an athlete may return to play as soon as possible, a variety of rehabilitation processes should be implemented. These should include progressive mobilisation, graduated exercise (including stretching, conditioning and total body fitness), training and the use of hot and cold applicants. When each step is correctly addressed, it will increase the likelihood of a speedy reintroduction to sport. Progressive mobilisation is necessary to enhance the range of movement available. A quadriceps strain causes severe damage to muscle and connective tissues; tendons and ligaments, leading to scar tissue to form and immobilisation.…

Before starting to train for this run I was nervous, I did not think it would be possible to get myself to run 5 K and could not begin to think about doing a 10 K. During the training process I discovered that I preferred ten minutes running and one minute walking opposed to seven minutes running and one minute walking. I decided the ten and one method the day of the run, I stuck with it and pushed through. Eventually I understood how to breath when running and how to run distances. One of the first runs our class did back in September in the ravine I felt disgusting afterwards. It was a hot day, I was running at the back of the line, I had cramps and I just wanted to take a nap.…

    Narrative Essay On Torture

I was enjoying the early sunrise and misty New Orleans weather when I was introduced to a form of torture. The torture did not include electric chairs or ropes, but rather tightly laced running shoes and bursting calf muscles. The one thing that drove me to this torture was the only thing that could drive me to do anything I am uncomfortable with, which is my desire to be a good student. When I first found out as a naïve eighth grader that I had to run in a certain time to make an A, I was determined to simply force my body to obey the command to run fast. I knew so little about the science and art of running, and this became apparent to me during my first mile test.…
