The concept of his photography work entitled "Half-Drag" expresses " the extravagantly made-up drag divas and the organic men that lie beneath." When we watch drag queens on television and see them in person; we don’t think about who they are without the make-up we just observe them with the glitz and the glamor and the fancy exotic clothes. When we speak to them they give us the attitude, jazziness and the funniness that makes us laugh. Leland stated that he wanted to capture them in a different light " my intention is to capture both the male and the alter ego female side of these subjects in one image in order to explore the cross over between males and females and to break down the physical barriers that separate them." It is often stated that "people genders are invalid and wrong" , but who are we to judge a person based on who they want to be. Some humans in this world feel like they are connected to both sides and in his body of work you can see that. I look at it as being half and half meaning who you are biological vs who you want to or also can be. I love how he uses various races in his shoots. On his website you see, Caucasians, African Americans, Asians, and Mexican models giving bold looks to the camera. Everyone facial expression is different. Each picture comes with a different meaning. In one look a Caucasian man with red lipstick and blonde hair is staring at you with a fierce face which shows his confidence in embracing both sides of himself. In another picture shows an Asian man expressing a look that explains either you accept me or you don’t . You also have photographs that shows a Mexican man staring wit confusion. You can interpret his picture as him being indecisive with who he is as a person and the gender role he connects to the most. Interpretation is everything , Leland purposely could've use this as a way for his work to be relatable to someone life story.
