Half Dawn Light Short Story

The half-dawn light was more eerie than complete darkness. I had just been awoken by some rustling that sounded as if two raccoons were wrestling in my garden. That wouldn’t have been a surprise since my week had already been terrible. Those darn kids just had to pelt my poor flowers with rocks! That really hurt me, since those marigolds were one of my few sources of my happiness. I was pretty sure that my son, John would not hear the noise since he was a heavy sleeper. So I decided roll out of bed slowly and to get up on my shaky legs. The only nightgown I owned was the one I was wearing at the time with its patched up the holes and faded colors. I stepped outside into the dim dawn light reflecting on my garden and to my surprise, two kids. One boy and one girl, but only one of them were in my garden. The other stayed back. He looked terrified and shocked by what the tiny girl was doing. She was madly pulling out my beautiful marigolds! She …show more content…
The orange ray’s of the sun was meeting the earth. Then I remembered the time I planted those little flowers. My husband was terribly sick with mono and was on the edge of passing away. He was the best man in my life. His family always came first so even though he was sick, he went to work seven days a week until he could not walk. He was always thinking about me though; So right before he passed, he had bought me and John magnificent marigolds. That was the last thing he had ever given me. The marigolds would always be one of my few sources of happiness in this cruel world. Now, they were destroyed. I looked away from the horizon, and back to the kids. The boy looked at the girl and said, “Lizabeth, Look!” She opened her teary eyes to look into mine. The girl had dirt everywhere. She even managed to get it into her brown hair. She then scrambled to her feet and said, “M-miss Lottie!” I looked at her face. She appeared to be mad, upset, and confused all at the same
