Halcyon Moments In Lifeguard

Decent Essays
In literature and in life, halcyon moments are integral to our development as individuals. In the story “Lifeguard” Chris’ halcyon moment is when he is, “high diving, [Chris] like[s] everything about it, the swing of [his] back [when] [Chris] climb[s] the ladder, the metal steps and rungs cold under [his] feet and hands. [Chris] even like[s] the way [his] stomach falls away when [he] get[s] to the top and [can] feel the pebbly grain of the platform under [his] feet” (Scott p.22 line 20-23). The reason for this being his halcyon is because when Chris goes diving before the pool opens, he gets a kick out of it. An achievement that sets me apart from others would be my National Lifeguard Service (NLS) certification, which I attained in the spring of 2015. This credential acknowledges that I have the skills to prevent people from drowning in pools, beaches and lakes, across the nation. It also deems me capable of supervising and overseeing multiple activities, competitions and swimming programs. Some may consider lifeguarding as just another job, but for me, it’s a lifestyle. My competitive swimming background, beginning when I was five years old, has exposed me to multiple situations where lifeguards had to act quickly, efficiently to make accurate decisions based on their knowledge and judgment.…

In countless instances, Chris expressed his distaste for the conformity of a society, as he saw with his own family, in which one’s life is a routine that consists of waking up, going to work, coming home to family, going to sleep, and repeating it for the rest of one’s life. McCandless set out into the world after college not to appreciate nature specifically, but the experiences of the world, as he described, “’It is the experiences, the memories, the great triumphant joy of living to the fullest extent in which real meaning is found.’” (27) Chris strived for a daily sense of adventure, an escape from the limitations of community, as Andy, a high school friend of McCandless, explained, “[Chris] was born into the wrong century. He was looking for more adventure and freedom than today’s society gives people.” (119) Another aspect that was unpractical of Chris, that led to his unfortunate death in Alaska, was his seclusion and his desire to be alone.…

The author applies sarcasm to show Christopher’s discomfort in his current surroundings as he is hindered by the wording as well as the new location. The use of double meanings to show Christopher’s panic is common throughout the novel. Moreover, when Christopher learns that his father has been lying to him, he says, “It was like the room was swinging from side to side” (112).…

Life jackets are usually filled with foam which is light and can displace a lot of water compared to it’s weight. The life jacket floats because the foam that is inside the life jacket is light which means it doesn’t have to displace a lot of water. Also because our bodies already have some buoyancy the life jacket doesn’t need to support the whole weight of our bodies just enough to keep our heads above water.…

Falling 176 feet was not something I had planned for this day. The wind sang in my ears; the roar of clashing metal rang in the air and people cheered. The endless pile of wood used to form a track shook violently as we ran over it, finally leaving the hill and forming a 76° angle with the ground…54 meters above comfort. Adrenaline raced through my veins faster than the coaster cart on the tracks; the whistle tone of the wind sang in harmony with the shrieks of fellow riders.…

Mystical experiences cannot be a source of knowledge. If mystical experiences were considered a source of knowledge we would have to rely on what the mystics said. Since every mystical experience is personal there would be no way to distinguish the real mystical experiences from the false ones. There also would be no way to distinguish the correct interpretations from the incorrect ones. Knowledge should be something that is attainable by everyone and can be verified by everyone.…

I could feel the connectedness of the characters in every unfolding event throughout the story and how all of them were affected by the choices Chris made in his reckless, foreboding odysseys. The author reveal the story with great details and even stated the spoken words of the characters. This in return, made me feel the weight of every sentence and how the people that were involved must have felt like knowing that they could not help Chris in his last dying moments. Near the end of the story, I was imagining how the people that love Chris all their lives or just for the short moments with him reacted when they were struck by the shear devastating news of Chris’s death. I suppose the author have cleverly written the story to the point that I could relate in a personal level to the characters in the…

Recommendation 2: Invest into Stand-Up Paddling (SUP) For the company to increase its profitability in the long run, it should consider investing into manufacturing paddles for Stand-Up Paddling (SUP), in order to establish a transient advantage. Moreover, while it’s crucial to increase profitability, it’s also vital to remain competitive by remaining aware of both local rivals and new entrants. Firstly, in terms of Fender Ltd., I propose that Relajante should form a joint venture (JV) via contract with them in order to gain access to their relationships with stores across the Gulf Islands, Nanaimo, Tofino and Campbell River. Not only will this increase our customer base, it will also enable us to gain an advantage over local stores. While, they’re requesting us to charge them $60,000 less for their bulk purchase of 5,000 paddles, we can consider the advantages of being partnered with Fender…
