Hairspray, Live: Musical Analysis

I saw NBC Live’s Production of Hairspray, Live! On TV at 8pm on December 7, 2016. The Musical was very stylish 1960 era musical. The main theme of this Musical is that everyone should be treated the same no matter what race, gender, or religion that they are. The costumes insisted of long 60’s dresses with very vibrant colors, and the men wore dressy pants and button up like shirts or polo’s. The set’s were 60’s style and took place mainly on the streets of “baltimore”. I noticed mainly in the sets that for the houses they used the very old mossy green or yellow like wallpaper that they used to put on their walls back in those times. The streets had cars that lined the edge of the streets with the regular stores and houses that really set the theme of baltimore a lot. The studio had a color of color that gave off a very joyful mood to the whole entire scene. I love the jail cell that Tracey Turnblad was placed and thought that was the best set. The bars that broke off of the jail cell were really cool to me and showed that she truly had broke away. If I were the set designer I would have actually built the store for Mr.Pinky, because I feel that it is a main part in the movie that …show more content…
The streets had a very low dim lighting to bring out the contrast of each building. I seemed to notice that in the Turnblad's house they had a yellow like lighting to really bring out that green wallpaper. I thought they did really good with the Conrie Collin's show lighting and sound because you really felt like you were almost at a dance club and that’s the whole purpose of the scene. If I were to fix anything I would add in a spotlight to Tracey right in the beginning of the performance when she is dancing on the streets to bring more of her costume colors out and her face because I couldn’t see much of

I attended a performance of Grease on April 16th in the Pasant Theatre. Having seen both the 1978 film and FOX’s Grease Live! I was very curious to see how this specific performance would compare to the others. The musical Grease is the epitome of sexuality, rebellion, and teenage drama. What made Michigan State’s version of this beloved musical so special was that it used the script from the original Broadway production and incorporated all of its unfiltered glory into various design elements.…

In todays society the media constantly shows and glamorizes the hair of other races outside of African Americans. The term “good hair” is often associated with straight, long and silky hair types. Instead African American women hair is associated with terms like thick, kinky and nappy. These aren’t just terms anymore that are used freely instead, they’ve become very stereotypical and judgmental to the black race. This puts pressure on African American women to feel doubtful of their natural hair, so much that black women use chemicals to make their hair silky straight, which ultimately result in damaged hair.…

As the house lights are gradually lowered in the Glenelg Country School auditorium, the audience’s effervescent chattering falls to a hush and all that can be heard is one voice somewhere in the theatre, enchanting the audience. The spectators listen intently as the voice travels throughout the theatre, until suddenly, a single spotlight illuminates a middle-aged man sitting on a worn armchair playing the soundtrack of his favorite musical on his antique turntable. So begins Gelnelg Country School’s performance of “The Drowsy Chaperone”. Written by Bob Martin and Don McKeller and music by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, the musical follows the story of an antisocial man as he provides hilarious commentary on his favorite musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone” while listening to its soundtrack on a record player in his quaint apartment. As the music plays, the show comes to life and emphasizes its nonsensical elements to satirize popular musical theatre.…

Hair the Musical vs Church Church, although filled with strict restrictions, has, since its conception, been a place of solace, a place of peace and love, a place where individuals unified by religion can congregate. The Hair musical on the other hand is a lot more than just a musical. It has been described by some as a cultural and social phenomenon, an exultant proclamation of freedom, life and a rebellious cry against politicians and war. The musical, set in the late 60’s, tells the tale of a couple of youths who have adopted a hippie lifestyle and the intricacies they experience as they pave their own rite of passage during the Vietnam era. The musical focuses on Claude, a nominal leader and the son of restive parents who want him to join the military.…

The production, Rent, is a rock musical that is based on a group of distressed artists having a hard time striving in the days of Alphabet City with HIV/AIDS constraining their lives. The original playwright, Billy Aronson, came up with the musical as a renewal of the opera La Bohemia of 1988. Aronson collaborated with Jonathan Larson, a playwright and composer, and created one of the most popular Broadway musicals to date. I watched and experienced a production of this musical at California State University Long Beach, University Theater, on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at exactly 8:00 pm. OutKast, a popular rap group throughout the nineties and early 2000s, has a renowned song entitled “Hey Ya!” which features the smooth flows of Andre 3000 and hard hitting rhymes of Big Boi. The song has been a huge hit for years and is virtually known by every American under the age of thirty. When the song was released in 2003, I was just three years old, but had already adopted my dad’s love for music and I frequented the kitchen tile as my dance floor whenever music was playing. OutKast’s song “Hey Ya!” holds a different weight than most other songs I grew up around because it is one of few memories I remember vividly about my childhood.…

Two of Broadway’s most talented voices emerged from the hit musical, “Wicked.” Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth both had been in broadway shows long before but wicked was the one that blew them into stardom. The musical displays numerous singing acts that tell the story of a girl who grew up slightly different from the rest and a stereotypical popular girl that tried to help her gain her confidence. Idina and Kristen’s voices are like no other in the musical because their voices bring our qualities in their character that complement the character so well. The dark alto tones of Idina plays off of the envy and awkwardness her character constantly lives with.…

Within the first five minuets, the audience can see how important the lighting is going to be throughout the movie. In the movie, the director focuses on lighting to portray the mood to the audience. The lighting would appear dim when times were bad, and brighter when good things were happening. For example, when Andy first arrives to the prison it is a very dim day, no sun was visible. As he gets off the bus he appears timid, Red says, “a stiff breeze could blow him over.”…
