men’s hair; called a conk,” (Little, 1940) Malcolm X desire for the conk hairstyle was because of his friend shorty he wanted to look like him and his hair was finally the right length to get it done. Malcolm X bought the ingredients which were available at his nearest grocery store and corner store. It was a cheaper way by doing it by yourself instead of going to a barbershop and getting it done. The ingredients were red devil lye, two eggs, two white potatoes, a large jar of Vaseline , fine toothed comb, rubber hose, large bar of soap, metal spray head, a rubber apron and a pair of gloves.…
The most gripping, thought-provoking points in Hairspray was the major racial discrimination that was seen and done throughout the course of this movie. African Americans are no less important than other people and it is shocking that a person could think otherwise. Also, I thought it was incredible and brave how Tracy stood up for her rights against racial…
To conclude, this film gave me an understanding of how people can treat each other. This is something that we need to fix. We should all have respect for one another no matter what race we are. I’m not saying to love each other but to have respect for one another.…
“Black Hair” by Gary Soto has a specific line that reminds me of what an average day in high school for me was like, “The days were dull. I did what there was to do from morning until the bell sounded”. I usually felt this way because, like Soto in his autobiographical story he felt alienated from everyone around him. I am about to tell you my story of a time in my life where I felt shunned by everyone.…
Moss learns that it’s ok for him to be different and that he deserves equal treatment, – again not from looking inside himself, but from a white man telling him so – and while that is a very important lesson for the audience to learn, it ignores the racist system surrounding Moss that has created many of his problems. The film’s ending gives the appearance that the problem has been solved and that Moss can no longer be hurt by prejudice. In a way this makes the trauma that black people go through because of racism personal rather than political, and therefore the film can assist the argument that there is no need for systemic…
There I was, lying in bed watching television with my aunt. Then suddenly, a Barbie commercial came on. Seeing the colors, and the adjectives that described the products. Seeing how fun it looked to actually play with that doll. Seeing how great it looked to have an actual house where dolls can live.…
West Side Story is a romantic musical film, that is compared to a ‘ Romeo and Juliet’ story. The musical explores a wide variety of themes. Some of the main themes include racism, sexism and loyalty. These themes are still relevant today however, they may be different to us. The choreographer uses dance throughout wisely, to help get different points across.…
Hairspray was a new movie this year and quite a good one. This movie is about a plump teenager named, Tracy Turnblad. It takes place in the early 60s.…
In This film, John Waters utilizes formalistic criteria, however it's basis is that of a real life example of what he remembers as a teenager. This style was the mis-en-scene, which was evident in the beginning as the title credits rolled and theme song played("Hairspray" by Rachel Sweet with Deborah Harry). Each Corny Collins' character has a 1960s style – big hair, stylish suits and dresses, and some classical-like music to dance to. Every shot within the title sequence focuses mainly on the hair, because of hairspray. One part, Corny Collins looks at an album by a black singer and pitches it out of his sight, hoping no one sees, indicating segregation.…
Often, women walk down the beauty aisle of a department and grocery stores and see all types of merchandise for their hair, but not many know what the products are right for them. They see products that promise to rejuvenate dry, damaged hair; volumize limp, flat hair; straighten curly hair, and regenerate thinning hair. With my hair being a kinky curl, when I was younger, I would ask my mother if we could buy relaxers and apply them at home. She would give me the same answer every time, “This should only be performed by a professional if you do not want to ruin your hair.”…
I have seemed this movie numerous times, but this time, I watched it from a different perspective, and I saw people’s lives tangled as they dealt with racial differences while living in Los Angeles. As I was watching the movie over again, I said, WOW---so this is what the movie is about, since it was part of my assignment to look at it. The film begins with a black man speaking, named Detective Graham, “It’s the sense of touch---we miss---so much that we crash into each other just so we can feel something.” We want to be moved by one another; to feel each other existence. After that, his partner, a Latina Detective, named Ria, tells her partner that they in a collision.…
The author of the book is a white woman, which hinders the effectiveness of the theme, which focuses on the experiences that people of color go through that those who are white can’t fully comprehend. She addresses the issues, but does so in a way that is unrealistic and slightly biased. Throughout the story, people go through major mental changes in short amounts of time. At the end of the book, characters completely reverse their attitudes and earn redemption by their peers, which is nearly impossible in real life. While some life experiences are impactful enough to cause someone to drastically change their viewpoints, this is unrealistic in the setting, considering the character’s background.…
Balta 1 Erdem Balta ASIU 101 15.12.2015 In the movie “La Haine” it is quite possible to talk about traditional stereotypes concerning race, class and/or culture. The movie takes place in the in Paris, and three friends are centered: one is a black guy, Hubert; another one is an African, Said and one is a Jew, Vinz. The movie has number of racial, class and cultural points that are underlying ‘the other’ of France. Starting from the first scene, we observe a Paris that is not matching with the developed French image we have.…
Media Analysis: White Men Can’t Jump Race is an issue that many members of society face today, in particular those in a minority of their communities. Things such as everyday life, can in itself be conducted by one's ‘race’. This problem has been around ever since the idea of race was created and has been a constant source of conflict in modern society. 1992 brought us a movie released with the title: White Men Can’t Jump, the movie addresses race issues in sports. This is a story of a white ex college basketball player Billy Hoyle, who ‘hustles’ black players that underestimate his skills on the streets.…
Hate and fear that exist between people because of race or ethnicity can be stripped away under the right circumstances and lead people to realize that we are all fundamentally the same regardless of race or ethnicity. Racism and discrimination continue to exist in the United States today. Racism and discrimination tend to group people together based on stereotypes associated with a particular race or ethnicity. The truth is, within every race and ethnicity stratification exists. In the movie, some of the kids were physically abused.…
