Hanuman is a Hindu god and a devout follower of Rama, which is one of the many avatars of the god Shiva (Wikipedia). Hanuman is a monkeylike deity who is one of the most worshipped figures in Hinduism (Wikipedia). He is known for his “bravery, perseverance, strength” as well as his abstinence from sexual activities and his loyalty towards Rama (Heaphy). Because of Hanuman’s loyalty to Rama, he is mentioned in the Ramayana, an old Sanskrit which depicts ideal characters such as “the ideal father, the ideal servant, the ideal brother, the ideal wife, and the ideal king,” (Wikipedia). Hanuman depicts the perfect follower and plays an important role helping Rama.
Hanuman first finds Rama and his brother, Lakshmana, during Rama’s fourteen year exile (Wikipedia). During this exile, Rama alongside Lakshmana is searching for his wife, Sita, who was kidnapped by Ravana (Wikipedia). Hanuman offers to carry Sita to safety, but she refuses saying it would be dishonorable to her husband (Wikipedia). In order to reassure Sita, Hanuman gives her a ring that Rama wanted her to have (Wikipedia). While waiting for Rama to arrive and save Sita himself, Hanuman proceeds to destroy Lanka (Wikipedia). Hanuman later allows himself to be captured by Ravana’s son, Indrajit, thinking he could spy on Ravana. Once he meets Ravana, he relayed Rama's message of warning and demands the safe return of Sita; saying that Rama would be willing to forgive him if he returns Sita honorably (Wikipedia). This enrages Ravana and tries to sacrifice Hanuman to the goddess Kali. Hanuman outwits the Ravana by using his shapeshifting powers and earns Kali’s respect in the process (Wikipedia).
