Hagia Triada Sarcophagus

The Sarcophagus of Hagia Triada depicts Minoan funerary rites to honour the dead. Sacrifices and gift giving as part of the procession are shown on each of the sides. On one side, the people are presenting the gifts to the dead man himself, standing outside his tomb. The piece has a strong emphasis on line, shape, and colour. Many patterns adorn around the main register. The entire piece is filled with colour, though now most of it has faded. Strong lines separate each part of the patterns and main register. The emphasis on line is apparent, especially when looking at a work comprised of different registers. Horizontal and vertical lines are used to break the sections up clearly as well as add detail. Different lighter line weights adorn the …show more content…
The focus on primary colours around the outer registers shows that this piece was probably very loud to the eye. Each basic shape alternates between red, blue, yellow, or white. The reason these colours were used together was most likely due to them having the strongest pigments as well as being the most readily available to use. On the inner main register, a darker brown colour was used to differentiate males from females, who were depicted as very fair-skinned as was a staple of the time period. In a time when the human form was shown simply and uniformly, colour was often used as the defining factor to show things like gender and status. All of these elements work together to inform the viewer. Without the strong lines and bold colours, there would be less differentiating between figures and shapes. The Minoans did not have all the resources and subsequent techniques built from those resources to create their artwork. Still, the registers are clear and the main section is clearly recognizable as a honourary procession. With their basic colours and shapes, they were still able to create an identifiable image, which is a testament to their

For this analysis, the artwork I selected a Volute Krater made in Greece during the 4th century B.C.E. The artist, The Underworld Painter, uses several lines, especially in the temple made for Atlas. The horizontal and vertical lines give the temple definite shape because of the thickness and they signify that a hero who has died, is the focal point on the back of the vase. The artist also uses curved lines at the top of the vase to show the richness of detail and drive the story further. The artist also uses the pointing hands of several figures to show a psychological point; Atlas on his throne and Selene driving her chariot.…

It is a large sarcophagus made from limestone and painted both long sides as well as both short sides and bordered with colorful rosettes and floral spirals. The long back side shows a funerary procession of three dark-skinned men wearing long skirts and carrying animals to what appears to be an altar or perhaps the tomb itself, and behind the three men are two light-skinned women in long, perhaps ceremonial, dresses and carrying buckets for liquid offerings to be poured into a larger vessel, followed by a dark-skinned man wearing the same long dress as one of the women and playing the lyre. On the long front side is a procession of three light-skinned women in dresses, with the leading woman wearing an elaborate headdress and brandishing what might be a knife preparing to sacrifice a bull that is strapped down to a table in the center with two other animals underneath the table and a dark-skinned man wearing a robe and playing the double flute behind the table. To the right is a light-skinned woman performing some activity on an altar or perhaps in a basin on the altar, and to the far right is perhaps another altar with a small plant with large sprouting fronds and small horns of consecration. The long sides are both very descriptive and seem to have a narrative, however the short sides, while beautifully detailed, show only a small snippet of what feels like a larger scene: both short sides show two light-skinned women in long dresses are wearing elaborate headdresses and sitting in a chariot, on one side the chariot is being pulled by a horse, but on the other, the chariot is being pulled by a griffin, clearly another instance of griffins relating to power in Minoan…

A comic book generally consists of a system of related panels with images that may or may not incorporate text in order to tell a story. Unlike a traditional novel, a comic book is able to incorporate certain visual elements of rhetoric. These elements of rhetoric range from, but are not limited to, motion lines and visual perspective, to color intensity and the style of the font chosen to print the lettering in. These elements of rhetoric all work together in order to more effectively tell the story or fulfill the comic's purpose.…

With the rise of the practice of inhumation a market for the new sarcophagus was created. As with any object being created in today’s business world, price dictates luxury. With each types of sarcophagus, the price was dictated by the medium, the distance and mode of transport for the medium, and the workmanship involved to finish the sarcophagus. First the marble or stone were quarried, roughly cut into a rectangular shape, hollowed out, to save on weight, and shipped by land or sea. After arriving at the secondary workshop the new arrived marble or stone boxes were roughly hewn into its preferred shape.…

Each person depicted in the painting, especially those in the foreground, are each wearing clothes that have different hues, such as the Virgin is wearing blue while the Saint John is wearing red. The colors of each of their clothing are quite intense adding to the energy of the scene. There is also a mix of warm and cool tones throughout the painting, which adds the disorder of the painting. Another important aspect of the painting is the use of color in the middle ground and background.…
