Hae Min Lee Research Paper

Juror’s Statement
Adnan Syed has been put on trial for the murder of Hae Min Lee. Not only has he been charged with life in a high security prison, but also has maintained his innocence for his whole trial and sentencing. Even though Jay’s testimony had been changed slightly over time, the story itself is consistent. Adnan killed Hae by strangulation and Jay helped Adnan bury her body in Leakin Park. Even though I state that Adnan is not innocent, he should not have been convicted with the evidence presented at trial.
This physical evidence does prove that Adnan was in Hae’s car but does not conclude to when he was there or how often he was with her. The months before Hae went missing, Adnan and Hae had been in a steady relationship in which Adnan could have easily used the map on a car ride with Hae. This evidence is just as circumstantial as any other piece of evidence collected during the case, even though it might be looked at as forensics there is no for sure positive indication that Adnan was in Hae’s car the day she was murdered. Also, there were many other fingerprints on the map of other friends and relatives.

This letter could have pushed Adnan to self reflect and try to think about how he had been acting before. After Hae had been declared missing, there was a long weekend due to a snowstorm. During this snowstorm, Adnan could have been reflecting on his life and his time that he had spent with Hae. During the time that Hae was missing, Aisha and Krista had been updating Adnan on any information about Hae either from the news or police. Don, Hae’s boyfriend, also was not trying to contact her either. Just because Adnan didn’t try to contact Hae doesn’t mean that he killed

Hae and Adnan’s relationship was meant to be kept a secret from family and friends (friends meaning anyone who would relay the news to his parents). Once the break up took place, the prosecutor brought up the idea that Adnan felt betrayed, all because of Adnan’s religion? Adnan’s mother excused the court and jury of discrimination, because they are Muslim. During the trial on March 31, 1999, the ‘evidence’ or ‘argument’ made against Adnan was pulled from 2 other cases, nothing similar about them other than the religion, Muslim. They said, because of Adnan’s religion, he automatically had resources, people in the community to help him flee after he was released from custody.…

Not only that but the only person who claims to have seen him in that time frame “called one of the prosecutors in… the case…and undermined her own statement” proving his actual location was unknown at the time. It is unusual that Adnan would not remember anything about this crucial day because he received a phone call from the police. He says he does “remember that phone call and [he does] remember being high at the time” but continues to deny remembering anything else because the day was “normal”, but, receiving a phone call from the police does not seem very normal and most people would remember the events leading up to it. Another reason why Adnan is legally at fault is because he…

The second reason I think Adnan must be innocent is because there are too many inconsistencies that Jay provides during his testimony while being interviewed by the police. Jay provides many stories, which sometimes do not match up to Adnan’s story or to the stories he provides. There were many inconsistencies that did not make sense, of which I will share the 3 that I found most important, which you can find in episode 4 called “Inconsistencies". The…
