Hae Min Lee Essay

Imagine being an 18 year old high school student. You’re madly in love with the girl of your dreams and everything is great. Then, all of a sudden, bang, out of nowhere you get dumped. You are so angry at this girl for breaking your heart, you strangle her. It’s awful, right? This anecdote is actually a reality for Adnan Syed, murderer of Hae Min Lee. In the podcast Serial, produced by Sarah Koenig, the murder of Hae Min Lee is evaluated in depth. Jay Wilds, an acquaintance of Adnan’s, was the lead witness in the murder case, and he is the main reason why Adnan currently sits in the Maryland Correctional Facility. Jay’s timeline matches Adnan’s call log which proves an unusually calm and alibi-less Adnan killed Hae Min Lee.
A call placed from Adnan’s phone known as the Nisha call distinguishes Adnan’s guilt because it correlates with Jay’s timeline. During the time Jae supposedly had Adnan’s phone, the cell had seven outgoing calls. Six out of those seven calls were to people Jay knew, but the seventh call was to someone unknown to Jay. This quote is from Nisha during the trial. “Adnan walked in with his cellphone and told me to speak

However, this absolutely, 100 percent cannot be true. First, the call lasted two minutes and twenty-two seconds. Why in the world would someone answer their phone and listen to absolutely nothing for two minutes and 22 seconds? Second, Nisha’s phone did not have a voicemail. (Koenig, “The case Against Adnan Syed”). Therefore, the two minutes and 22 seconds could not just be a soundless voicemail.
In conclusion, Adnan Syed is guilty of murder for numerous reasons. Three incriminating pieces of evidence are the Nisha call, the fact that Adnan has no alibi, and Mr. Syed’s reaction to the whole situation. Overall, Jay’s timeline matches Adnan’s call log which proves an unusually calm and alibi-less Adnan killed Hae Min

Adnan says that he didn't have anything to do with the murder and he says that Mr.Wilds story is false. After 16 years in prison Mr. Syed filed for an appeal to a new trial because he and others who've read over this case, felt as if he was not granted a fair trial because of newfound evidence(cell phone records, Jay’s inconsistencies, Jay’s consistences, police recordings, letters, timelines, DNA,the pinged cell phone towers, and specific locations) and major errors and mistakes that were made in the case. Adnan Syed was not granted a fair trial, but he is guilty for the murder of Hae Min Lee.…

There is no physical evidence that Adnan committed the murder, just assumptions and theories that led to his imprisonment. Jay, Adnan’s best friends boyfriend, tells the cops that Adnan had let him know that he was going to kill Hae. He also states that Adnan gives him his car and cellphone but who does this with someone you don't really know. There is no true evidence here. Jay even lets the cops know he helped bury Hae’s body.…

Jay told the police that Adnan told him the plan of how he is going to murder Hae. Jay also said that Adnan showed him the body of Hae in his trunk. In the podcast, Jay says, “Because it’s not something you forget – where you were when you saw a dead body in the trunk of a car.” (Episode 4, pg 65). This explains that Adnan is guilty since Jay witness the body of Hae after Adnan murdered her.…

There is too much leisure time in the way Jay has described the timeline. Also, if Jay is telling the police that he is innocent and Adnan is guilty why wipe the fingerprints and throw the clothes away. The payphone must’ve been somewhere else. Jay probably forgot how the day went for there to be leisure time. He probably did not want to be involved in the first place and did not want to go to the cops at first.…

Not only that but the only person who claims to have seen him in that time frame “called one of the prosecutors in… the case…and undermined her own statement” proving his actual location was unknown at the time. It is unusual that Adnan would not remember anything about this crucial day because he received a phone call from the police. He says he does “remember that phone call and [he does] remember being high at the time” but continues to deny remembering anything else because the day was “normal”, but, receiving a phone call from the police does not seem very normal and most people would remember the events leading up to it. Another reason why Adnan is legally at fault is because he…

That is a huge detail from this day because usually you would remember a day that a cop calls you. You would remember where you were, what you were doing, who you were with. In fact Koenig says “you were young, you were high, it is a scary call to get.” (Koenig, “The Case Against Adnan Syed”). In case you did not know, Adnan smokes weed which some could believe why he does not in fact remember the call from the police.…

    Why Adnan Syed Is Innocent

The second reason I think Adnan must be innocent is because there are too many inconsistencies that Jay provides during his testimony while being interviewed by the police. Jay provides many stories, which sometimes do not match up to Adnan’s story or to the stories he provides. There were many inconsistencies that did not make sense, of which I will share the 3 that I found most important, which you can find in episode 4 called “Inconsistencies". The…

Even with all of this in mind, the court sees him as the main suspect and is not dissuaded by his normal persona. They pin him as Hae Min Lee’s killer by using the jealous boyfriend stereotype. It is also bad for his case when there are phone records and accounts of him acting strange on the day of her murder. Jay seems to be the only one that has a story that is sound enough to have Adnan as the main suspect.…

You never trust a drug dealer even if you think he is telling the truth because he is involved in illegal activity all the time. As you can see, Jay is not a reliable resource and should not be trusted considering his illegal activities. In brief, Adnan Syed is not guilty because he has an alibi, no motivation for the murder, and the witnesses of the murder are not reliable. Many people have tried to prove Adnan guilty or innocent, but overall there is more proof of him being innocent than there is guilty. Adnan’s murder was either meticulously thought out or it was just a matter of bad luck for Adnan.…
