Numerous times in court the prosecution raises the topic of Adnan’s relationship with his family and his religion. The prosecution constantly claims that Adnan believes he has let down his family and religion for Hae, who at the time was his girlfriend, but Adnan claims in Serial that he has never felt that Hae was ruining his relationship with his religion. He said he wasn’t the perfect son because he did drugs and dated. . The prosecution used these facts to try and show the court how he was betraying his family. During Adnan’s trial the prosecution recounts the events that occurred at Adnan’s prom where both his mother and father storm into the prom and take him home. In Hae’s diary she recounts the night as horrific and embarrassing while Adnan told Saad, his best friend at the time, he found it quite funny. The prosecution claims that night would haunt Adnan because of how it was a reminder of the betrayal he was performing by dating Hae. The tactic that the prosecution was using was to try and convince the judge and jury that Adnan felt torn between his relationship with Hae and his relationship with his family and his religion. Adnan seemed to joke with how dating Hae was a sin throughout their relationship and Hae seemed to take it as something important. Hae thought a lot about how she could be coming between Adnan and his religion even though Adnan did not appear to give it a second thought. Adnan stated in Serial that as a teenager he wasn’t super religious and showed that by smoking drugs, drinking alcohol and dating girls--all things that aren’t supported either by his family or his religion. The overall tactic of using Adnan’s religion and family life against him is unethical because they are not looking at all of the details surrounding his life—only a small piece.
