Hackru Personal Statement

Last year I was solely set on majoring in computer science and being a programmer for a living and making millions while working at home by creating genius apps that would change the world. It sounded like the perfect plan because it would incorporate my love for technology and my creativity into a career that would not have me staring at four walls everyday questioning why I chose this job. The future is frightening, without a taste of what computer programming is, how am I supposed to know if that is the right fit for the rest of my life? While researching this particular major, I stumbled upon an event that sparked my interest hosted by Rutgers University in New Jersey-- HackRU.

However, I wanted to find out if computer science was my calling. When I went to Rutgers University I was overwhelmed, excited and nervous at the same time. After checking in we had to wait around for the event to officially start. The hackathon was inside of the Rutgers’ sports complex. I am not an overly shy person, but it was hard for me to go out of my comfort zone to make new friends and not be the smartest one in the room.
While learning things here and there from my teammates, I was fascinated by what they could do and what programming was all about. These students seemed to be geniuses to me, they knew exactly how to make each object in their game or program move or pop up perfectly. By the end of the event I was so tired from staying awake looking at computer screens for 24 hours that all I wanted to do was get on the road and go back home. Looking back on HackRU I realize that it is not what I want to do for the rest of my life. It is a very complex major that I do not think would reward me entirely. I did teach me that I do want to work with computers, just in a different way. Since HackRU I have taken an Intro to Law course at my school and have figured out what I want to major in college. At seventeen years old I had my first introduction to the United States Healthcare system. In November of 2004 I had three weeks left on my mother’s health insurance, I was approaching my last semester of high school and was having frequent unexplained fainting spells. With a month left on my insurance I quickly went through rigorous testing to determine the cause, leaving me feeling like a test subject in a lab. In the beginning of 2005 I was diagnosed with epilepsy. Specifically, I had complex partial seizures, I was handed five different prescriptions and sent on my way.…

I hope to gain an exemplary foundational career experience from the EKU REU program. I was initially attracted to this program because the theme of disturbance ecology complements my own research interests in anthropogenic influence and conservation biology. Through individual research this summer and the research of others, I hope to learn more about the impact of human activity on landscapes, how to approach restoration, and what sustainable and effective scientific study looks like. I am excited to live in Kentucky and learn about its ecology and sociology, having never been to the area before. In addition, I hope to gain practical field and laboratory research skills at Lilley Cornett Woods old-growth forest ecosystem and Maywoods Environmental…

Why Hopkins? I knew this conversation well, but each time it was marginally varied. Today the aroma of popcorn wafted my way as I sat at a table in Target. “We are moving to Baltimore this summer,” my dad said. Thus began another relocation experience, one that continued to foster my diverse interests.…

Growing up in Maine had so many advantages from the beautiful scenery to the unique qualities Mainers have. I can't say that I'm not blessed to have grown up in such a beautifully scenic place, but I can't say it's been easy. I'm originally from land-locked Indiana. I moved to Maine when I was younger with my parents and brother and as much as I love being from a different place it's been hard growing up without a close family in a state so closely tied together with their families. Growing up in Maine, especially Mid-Coast Maine, you know that all of the surrounding families have lived there for generations, everybody knows everybody, cousins go to school together, and siblings work together.…

I’m jealous of people who have always known what they want to do when they grow up. I’ve questioned myself for so long. My parents, facing many difficulties, had to make a choice: stay in Iran and attempt to survive the war, or immigrate to the United States to create a better quality of life for themselves and their future children. They chose the latter and, with much toil, travelled to the United States and began a new life. Growing up, a huge motivator in my life was the constant reminder of the sacrifices my parents had made. I have always tried my hardest to live up to my parents’ expectations; it only seems right, seeing that they left their lives behind to give me opportunities that they didn’t have growing up. I’ve made it a priority to repay them by dedicating my utmost to all that I do, but somehow my utmost is never sufficient and I feel that I am…

As my high school career comes to a close, I realized that after 13 years of being asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?” , I still hadn’t answered the question. In 2002, a book called “StrengthsQuest” was released by Donald O. Clifton, Edward “Chip” Anderson, and Laurie A. Schreiner, in hopes it would give college students like me a simple, yet extremely helpful tool to guide them through their college experience. In this book one can find things called Signature Themes. The signature themes are given to readers after they take the “Clifton StrengthsFinder”.…

I remember pushing a button on my Nintendo Gameboy and being amazed at how this little piece of technology worked. I would be moving my character around the screen with a smile on my face. The emotion I felt was pure joy. However, it was only recently that I realized that I wanted to do something to create these kinds of experiences for people to enjoy just like myself. As I grew older I realized that in order to create these types of experience I would need a degree in computer science, and from there I realized that I could do a lot more with this knowledge.…

Another reason I chose computer science is because computers are shaping the direction our world takes and I want to play a part in that. The idea of writing a program that helps a physicist decode the secrets of the universe or a doctor discover a cure for a serious disease holds great appeal for me. Computer science is a continually growing field and with computers becoming involved in almost every aspect of our lives it should remain so for the foreseeable future. Thanks to computer chips imbedded in everything from basketballs and shoes to computer-controlled thermostats more and more computerized data is being produced daily and to manage the acquisition, storage and use of this data will require computer scientists [1]. While sending jobs overseas will slow some aspects of computer science-related job growth overall computer science jobs are expected to continue growth through 2020 [3], [4], [5].…
