Another term for vinegar is acetic acid (HAc) in water. Only the H in HAc is acidic. The molarity of the acetic acid can be determined by the titration of vinegar with the strong base sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The balanced equation for this reaction between HAc and NaOH is: HAc + NaOH > NaAc + H2O. The equation is balanced so that one mole of HAc reacts with one mole of NaOH.
The molarity for NaOH was given, (MNaOH: 0.100). To find the molarity for acetic acid the following equation was used: MHAc = (MNaOH x mLNaOH) / mLHac. Since the reaction for acetic acid and sodium hydroxide is a clear reaction, a weak organic acid called phenolphthalein (HP), was used as the acid indicator to determine the exact point when nHAc = nNaOH.
