Chances are, attending school regularly, living in a decent neighbourhood and playing sports were very normal. 4.9 million canadians are living in dangerous neighbourhoods with crime and violence all around them. They grow up with these negativities as the only way of living that they know, so how are they expected to excel in life and do great things when they do not have very many positive role models in their lives? They did not have the same experiences when growing up and now their children will most likely miss out on those experiences as well. Donating to Habitat for Humanity will give these children the experiences that they never thought they could have and help them achieve things they never would have thought they could achieve. In Canada, the poverty level for a family of 4 is $23, 283. Families making less than this amount struggle to do basic things like enrolling their kids in the sports they love and putting food on the table for their families. Poverty is a vicious cycle that is difficult to get out of and Habitat for Humanity needs donations to help families who are stuck in this cycle. By donating to Habitat for Humanity, you will not only help with building their houses but you will also be donating to help them start building the foundation to the rest of their lives (Habitat for Humanity

I am currently a Master of Social Work student at University of Windsor and from being in the program, it had really opened my eyes about the negative impact that inequality has on marginalized groups. Canada is often described and portrayed as a land of opportunity and a place where people can live good lives. Unfortunately this is not the case for everyone since there are individuals and families who are currently living in poverty. A lot of Canadians are negatively impacted by child poverty, income inequality and gender equity which does not make sense especially for a wealthy country like Canada. In Windsor for instance, the west end is often given a bad name since there is a lot of run down homes and it is not as nice as the east end and…

As government assistance decreased, the labour market faced changes that resulted in increased income inequality as many struggled to navigate the precarious labour market (Lewchuk et al., 2013). Canada saw an increase in poverty and food instability at this time. Paradoxically, the increased need for social assistance was met with drastic cuts to government social spending. Community and charity based organizations, such as food banks, soup kitchens and other community initiatives such as the Portland Hotel Society (Mate, 2008), emerged as a short-term response. Canada’s first food bank opened in Edmonton in 1981 and today food banks exist in 508 communities across Canada (Hurtig, 2000).…

But the truth is many Canadians struggle with poverty as well. There are numerous factors that play a significant part that allows one to understand why there is poverty in Third World countries for example, lacking technological advances of agriculture that we possess automatically sets them back and lack of booming exports that could support by bringing in money also greatly contributes to the mass poverty in those countries. Canada, however, is one of the most “prosperous countries” in the world so why would we even assume poverty in Canada.…

The poor in America may own nice things, and dress in well-maintained clothing. This makes it difficult for us to identify the truly poor who need our help. In Diana George 's essay "Changing the Face of Poverty” she uses Habitat for Humanity 's publicity videos as an example to demonstrate her frustration with the perception of poverty in America today. Their videos show black and white dismal images of shacks, thin and ragged looking children, men and women in despair.…
