Habitat for Humanity Self-Reflection Assignment
The organization that I chose to complete my hours was with Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity is about helping to build decent, safe and affordable housing, which include houses for single families and multi-unit houses (Habitat for Humanity, 2018).Habitat for Humanity's mission is to build affordable housing for families who are financially unstable, they also have a statement that truly reflects on what Habitat, "Seeking to put God's love into action, habitat for humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope" (Habitat for Humanity, 2018).

In 2008, Canada poverty rate was at 9% of low-income cut-offs due to taxes, 21% was single mothers, 36% remained with unattached elderly women, 28% in men (Potter et al, 2014, p. 6). Families and individuals have had poverty from basic necessities that the Maslow's Hierarchy of needs points out that physiological needs are the most vital. Unfortunately, Canada has made little effort in helping with poverty, and in the 1990 Canadian children had a high poverty rate of one in six children (Canadian Nurses Association, 2005). Habitat really focuses on trying to help those who need it. They are there to provide low-income families with the basic needs that individuals need. From 1997 and 2003, it seemed that Canada tried to improve quality of life by paying employment almost one-fifth more than pervious, making it twice as fast in permanent employment (Fuller & Vosko, 2008). Generally, Habitat for Humanity, is trying to assist in helping those who just need a little bit of stability before venturing off into the …show more content…
Unfortunately, there has been in increase in rate premature death and depression due to social isolation and exclusion (Canadian Nurses Association, 2005). But there are solutions that will benefit individuals that may be going through difficult times.
The first community that is close to Habitat for Humanity North York Restore would be a place named Fred Victor. It is an organization that assists in the homeless or low-income individuals to change lives in a positive way (Victor, n.d.). It is a non-profit organization, like Habitat, that offers emergency shelter, job training, food, counselling, and other services that will be useful for the individual (Victor, n.d.). This resource is close to the Restore that I volunteers at, and would be valuable due to it being somewhere where the individual would walk to and get some
