The integrated treatment and case management services support patient self-management in treatment. In addition to primary care and medication treatments, counseling by licensed mental health professionals is provided for adapting to an HIV diagnosis, depression, anxiety, substance use and mental health (FDOH – Bureau of HIV/AIDS, n.d.; Orange County Government –Florida, n.d.). At the end 2008, a needs assessment was completed that showed only ¼ of organizations included peer educators as part of the treatment team, however at the most recent US Conference on AIDS, it was a concept presented to retain and engage patients in treatment that a coordinator at the Health Department and the consortia of the local Consumer Advisory Group felt would play a critical role (FDOH – Bureau of HIV/AIDS, n.d). Peer mentoring staff were added to the treatment team to assist patients in navigating the clinical system and community resources, provide one-on-one support for the patients, assisting in the development and progress of patient’s treatment goals, coach patients in adapting to treatment recommendations and facilitating the support groups and communication between the patients and practitioners (FDOH – Bureau of HIV/AIDS, n.d., p. 3). The peer mentoring program creates an increased awareness and encourages patients to be better informed and take charge of their own care.
