HOPE organization was started and founded in the city of Pontiac in 1998; HOPE stands for “Helping Oakland’s People Everyday”. Debbie Nelson (Shelter Manager) told me the story about a homeless man name Jim who froze to death behind a dumpster in 1998. Records show Jim went to the emergency room to be treated for frostbite in his toes. The emergency room treated Jim but released him with a paper prescription. Days later Jim returned to the emergency room, they treated him and release him a gain. When Jim left the emergency room that night it ended up being his last night on earth; Jim died that same night alone and in the cold. Debbie said some people came together after hearing Jim’s story and started the warming center shelter for the winter months to prevent those types of deaths in the City of Pontiac. …show more content…
This organization overall has been serving the community for 19 years; they serve homeless adults in the Oakland County area. The Recuperative Care Center is a voluntary program that provides emergency shelter, meals, case management and medical care to homeless persons who are recovering from an acute illness, surgery or injury. The program offers short-terms care and 24/7 shelter to improve their conditions instead of living on the street, in shelters where guests exists during the night and have to leave during the day, or other unsuitable places. HOPE main location can serve up to 60 guests overnight and their Recuperative Center can house up to 10 guests
