HOPE Foundation Personal Statement

Improved Essays
The first is always powerful. I am no exception. My first contribution to the world took place when I worked for HOPE Foundation, an organization devoted to helping children, and women. I first joined out of pure curiosity and interest. Yet, HOPE Foundation soon became an essential part of my life and a catalyst that led me to my passion towards social activism. I started with teaching English at Tigri school, a school the organization funded in hopes of providing children in slum areas with education. I soon realized running workshops every weekend was not enough for these children. It was devastating to see that these smart kids were never given chances to go to a school due to their poor living quality. Even though HOPE Foundation did a fantastic job in providing a safe learning place for these children, I knew children should be taught with a more constructed syllabus in order to make up for the learning they all missed out for the last decade. I decided to launch a library in Tigri school and utilize the library to enforce reading habits, and to incorporate more well-adapted textbooks to their lessons. After two years of logistics and planning, I managed to have a …show more content…
With my own curriculum, I am planning to explore how different countries work together to address universal social justice issues. I want to facilitate countries’ recognition of the importance of international cooperation and to provide help both through direct material support and policy implementation. I am also planning to undertake an in-depth research on human rights by my senior year and take advantage of my self-designed curriculum and bring disciplines from various departments to apply them and form critical analyses of human rights conditions in different regions of the world and potential resolutions in approaching these

I am interesting in applying to PLFSOM because I have a desire to ultimately become a primary care physician that works in underserved communities. Coming from a rural area, I know what a lack of providers in a region can do to a community. I have spent a lot of time in border towns since my dads family is originally from Mexico and I have been able to see first hand that even the biggest of border towns still has a very big proportion of their population that is underserved. Right now, I already use my Spanish to help the Spanish speaking patients that we see at our clinic but my Spanish medical terminology is not as strong as I would like. Being able to get my medical education from a school so close to the border would help me become the…

Mary Robinson has been an efficacious champion of human rights for more than fifty years. While her eloquent autobiography, Everybody Matters: My Life Giving Voice, is full of interesting lessons about working in the global governance world, three lessons stood out in particular. First, to make a successful career in global politics, you must work with the skills you have and develop those you do not. Second, once you have joined the global governance workforce, support systems are necessary. Finally, the tools the United Nations provides are often insufficient to the complete the goals stated by the United Nations.…

Credit Sam Hodgson for The New York Times Libraries around the country have expanded story time and other children’s programs in recent years, attracting a new generation of patrons in an age when online offerings sometimes make trips to the book stacks unnecessary. Sari Feldman, president of the American Library Association, said such early-literacy efforts are part of a larger transformation libraries are undergoing to become active learning centers for their communities by offering services like classes in English as a second language, computer skills and career counseling. Ms. Feldman said the increased demand for story time was a product, in part, of more than a decade of work by the library association and others to encourage libraries to play a larger role in preparing young children for school. In 2004, as part of that effort, the association developed a curriculum, “Every Child Ready to Read,” that she said is now used by thousands of…

The author Held defines cosmopolitism as this ideal that enables people to see themselves as a part of a larger cultural, moral political community. Held explains cosmopolitism with an emphasis on the roots of cosmopolitan law. One of the things he points to is “universal hospitality” the idea that everyone anywhere has the right to seek admission to any other country and they have the right to be heard. Further more they have the right to make an appearance in public and have the ability to make their case, to have a hearing for example. Held suggests what underlies this is the notion that everybody has this equal moral standing and everyone the ability to make their voice heard in the state, that they have the right to do this in a way that…

After breaking my arm, a couple of years ago I was restricted in participating in many activities and this made me realise how much of our everyday activities we take for granted. What also came to my attention was how our physical and mental health ,in addition to our social environment, can affect our capability of carrying out daily living activities. For example, personal care, domestic tasks, socialising, and work. From this moment, the physical function of the human body has been an interest of mine. Having always wanted to enter a health profession career, what drew me towards Occupational Therapy was the diversity that the course offered from working in rehabilitation clinics, hospitals and care homes.…

My experience contemplating and advocating for the rights of the LGBTQ community has led me to become a feminist. As a professionally-trained musician, my interest in the performing arts are frequently labelled “girly” or “gay” by people in China. While I identify as gay, I am uncomfortable with the oversimplified perception of artistry belonging to a gender. Moreover, I am bothered by the assumption that being gay means being feminine and being feminine (as a male) means being gay, which implies that many homophobic comments are essentially biases against women.…

1.1 Background The need for an international criminal court came about by the fact that international community did not have adequate instruments to punish those who committed serious international crimes. Abuse of human rights law at the international level went unpunished due to the lack of legal structure and therefore punishment for these international crimes was left to domestic courts. The problem with the domestic courts was that they were used as agents of the criminals. They were therefore either reluctant or unable to bring the perpetrators of international crimes to justice.…

Affecting society socially, economically, politically, and culturally, international conflict and human rights is an important theme to study. Often young adults have little knowledge regarding this topic; however, since being informed helps one to be a valuable citizen, further education is crucial. Examining my knowledge on the topic of international conflict and human rights forces me to question why I remain in a state of unawareness, and what new concepts I must strive to learn. The development can be assumed as the improvement of the lives of vulnerable people. The lives of vulnerable people should be improved and protected by the humanitarian perspectives and standards. Regarding development and Human rights relation, Nelson and Dorsey (2003) identify three trends––a rights-based approach to development, collaborative campaigning by human rights and development NGOs, and the adoption of economic rights orientation by human rights groups––that are the substance of the growing interaction (pp.2014). When we approach to development, the implementation should focus on the human needs and human sufferings affected by man-made disaster, natural disaster, or poverty.…
