HLT Mentorship Analysis

Improved Essays
My interest in the becoming a HLT mentor stems mainly from being connected to strong mentors throughout the Honors curriculum. Each of my HLT mentors contributed greatly to my success at Kelley, and I feel obligated and would welcome the opportunity to give back to the Kelley Honor’s class below me. My first mentor, Will Colling, was actually the sole reason I landed a sophomore internship at a private equity firm. This internship helped me considerably during my search for a junior year internship in the investment banking industry. After a few meetings with Will, he recognized that I had both the free time and work ethic to be successful at the job. He connected me with right people and helped coach me on how to be successful in the role. …show more content…
I currently hold a 3.96 GPA. I have always been determined to actually internalize the information I learned in class, rather than just memorize and regurgitate. This process of learning has allowed me to be successfully when helping other students learn these concepts, a skill I could incorporate into my HLT mentoring. Additionally, I am an active member of the Investment Banking Workshop. Through the workshop, I have met and helped over twenty sophomore students in their pursuit of gaining acceptance into the workshop. Mentorship and giving back are both emphasized heavily by Professor Haeberle, both of which I have taken seriously. I would love to expand my mentoring ability while I still have time at Kelley. My experience working full-time at a private equity firm, Maxim Partners, has helped hone my knowledge of business and apply it in real life settings. I came to realize quickly of the major differences between the textbook knowledge taught in the classroom, and the real life application of that knowledge. While working full-time, I lead the execution of two acquisitions valued at $33 million and $55 million. The managing partner of the firm trusted me to complete the work typically expected of 24 year old professionals that possess two years of investment banking experience. Knowing I lacked the experience, I had to learn everything on the fly. Every e-mail I …show more content…
I have always been more of an extrovert, and saw the chance to jump at an opportunity to help younger students along their Kelley Honors journey. I not only believe I could help these students throughout the process, but the HLT Mentoring would also greatly benefit me as a person. As a young professional entering the working world, I will be seeking a mentor in the company I work for. By experiencing mentorship from the side of the mentor, I will be able to better identify and understand the mentor/mentee relationship. Thank you for your consideration in the

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

I met Andrea Seaberg two years ago when she was a senior at Detroit Lakes High School. She had been placed to work with me (a second grade teacher) from her School-To-Work advisor after she had told her that she was interested in becoming a teacher someday. Andrea and I hit it off immediately. She had the same love and energy that I feel I have as an educator. Needless to say, when she asked me to be her mentor throughout her schooling at Bemidji State University, I was thrilled.…

It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

Almost four years ago, I entered Clackamas High School as a confused, shy, awkward freshman. Soon after entering the hallways of this school, I was assigned to a Freshman Assurance group and met with the group leaders. My group leaders were vivacious seniors, who were condescending and gave very little advice on high school. I felt a little intimidated by them, and the activities that they led made most of the freshmen in our group uncomfortable. They told us about their craziest stories and about the teachers who weren't of the most pleasant experience.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…
