Having first discovered the cause of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus in the mid-1980s, it has been a race against time to develop a cure for this dreadful chronic in order to save millions of live around the world. At the moment there is no cure for this disease that kills the human immune system, however, there are drug for allowing the infectants to live a longer life and every significantly reduce the risk of transmitting the disease to another person. Currently the location where 75% of the HIV diagnosed people reside is at Sub-Saharan Africa, where over 24 million people live infected with HIV, as reported by Dr. Charles Wachihi in the film Disease Warriors. Over 60 % of the global deaths resulting from HIV, have been in Africa. Poverty plays a big role for the treatment of HIV, as do the determinants of health. Doctors in Africa can not prescribe the same drugs as Doctors in that United States, simply because of the income of the people that live in Africa. The patients in Africa normally have their lives prolonged for a short period of time, before they die, compared to the patients in the Unites States they can live a long life because they are receiving ART. People that live in developing countries also do not have as much access to contraceptives, as people in developed countries, therefore, spreading the disease to other people.
Current Developments and Advances. With technological advances and a greater understanding of the disease more progress is being made for development of a cure that eliminates HIV from the body of the host. A study conducted by Oxford University, shown in the film Disease Warriors, demonstrated how an increase in T-cells can be the answer to the permanent elimination of HIV from the host’s body by destroying the HIV infected cell, along with the virus.
